Kruger inc. has announced a $23.75 million investment in a demonstration project for carbon capture and reuse at its Wayagamack Mill in Trois-Rivières, aiming to capture up to 5 tons of high-quality CO2 per day. Kruger partnered with the developers of the carbon capture technology, Mantel Capture Inc., a pioneering North American start-up founded by engineers and scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Our team members, Anna Eckhoff and Mark Morawski PMP, connected with a wide range of attendees, including industrial emitters, fellow startups, Canadian and provincial government officials, and ecosystem builders. We were thrilled by the strong interest from emitters, many of whom are actively seeking effective solutions for decarbonization. A special highlight was seeing our host site partner for our demo project—Balazs Tolnai from Kruger Inc. —reaffirming the strength of our partnerships in Canada. Anna also took to the main stage, pitching Mantel’s technology to a full audience and generating excitement around our approach to carbon capture. Thanks to Decarb Connect Canada for an inspiring event focused on advancing decarbonization. Last week, Mantel and Kruger Inc. officially announced our groundbreaking partnership to deploy Mantel’s first-of-its-kind carbon capture technology at Kruger’s Wayagamack Pulp and Paper Mill! Mantel team members Ben Letter and Dan Schwab joined Kruger representatives and distinguished guests, including the Honorable Fran?ois-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry of Canada, and Jean Boulet, Québec Minister of Labour and Minister responsible for the Mauricie region, for the project announcement. ?? ?? Malia Lym, PE????♀?, Mantel's Lead Principal Mechanical Engineer, visited our salt tanks vendor, Sigma Thermal, Inc., last week to check on the progress of their build for our demonstration project. Sigma Thermal, known for delivering process heating solutions that cater to a wide range of applications and industries, is constructing the salt tanks that will play a crucial role in our carbon capture efforts. ??♀? We love showcasing our engineers in the field, collaborating closely with our vendors.??We're thrilled to see these next-gen systems take shape and are grateful for the incredible collaboration and dedication of our partners. The equipment and technology we're developing are major steps toward scalable, sustainable solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decarbonize heavy industries. What an incredible point-source carbon capture innovation event we had in Houston! A couple of weeks ago, Darcy Partners brought together over 30 attendees from 22 operators to explore new technologies from six innovators transforming #carboncapture. During the event, each company highlighted their unique approach and applications: ? Entropy Inc: amine-based solvent and heat integration process operating commercially at over 50 ktpa; Glacier Phase 2 reached FID in July 2024. ? ION Clean Energy: Third-gen amine-solvent piloted at Calpine's Los Medanos site, with plans for a >1 Mtpa plant. ? Aqualung Carbon Capture: Amine-based facilitated transport membranes enabling vacuum capture, tested in multiple countries. ? Ardent: Non-amine facilitated transport membrane; 20+ years of industry experience focusing on olefin separation and post-combustion capture. ? Mantel: Molten-salt borate-based sorbent for high-temp capture, to be piloted at a Quebec pulp and paper facility in 2025. ? Mangrove Systems: Digital MRV tool tracking CO? in CCUS projects, maximizing revenue via market monitoring. The morning included tech presentations, followed by an operator roundtable in the afternoon, during which users/partners of the presenting innovators (including Calpine, Delek US, Chevron, Shell, and Summit Carbon Solutions) shared their experiences and diligence processes.
