Cross-border payment flows are projected to hit $250 trillion by 2027, yet traditional methods remain slow and costly. With settlement times of 2–3 days and fees reaching up to 300bps, the burden falls on families and businesses relying on remittances. A global survey of 6,500 consumers across 13 countries highlights a growing shift toward frequent and diverse cross-border transactions:?? ?? 67% make monthly cross-border e-commerce purchases?? ?? 52% travel internationally at least once a year?? ?? 45% send or receive remittances monthly? For businesses facilitating remittances, liquidity remains a major challenge. The traditional pre-funded model forces companies to hold large capital reserves across multiple jurisdictions—tying up assets that could be put to more productive use. As transaction volumes grow, this model becomes increasingly unsustainable, turning success into an operational bottleneck.? Tether.io led the $10 million pre-seed round raised by stable coin MANSA #Mansa, a Dubai-based but Africa-focused #fintech startup, has secured $10 million in seed funding, combining equity and debt, to revolutionize cross-border payments through #stablecoin liquidity. The $3 million equity portion was led by #Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin provider, with additional participation from Faculty Group, Octerra Capital , Polymorphic Capital, and TRIVE. The remaining $7 million in liquidity came from decentralized finance (#DeFi) platforms, quant funds, family offices, and hedge funds. Mansa’s co-founders, CEO Mouloukou S. and COO Nkiru Uwaje, bring extensive expertise in finance, payments, and web3. Sanoh, an investor in various African fintechs, previously worked at web3 venture capital firm Adaverse. Uwaje served as an innovation manager at Swift and led blockchain strategy for Dell Technologies in the U.K. and Ireland. Together, they are building a robust liquidity solution for emerging markets, addressing the inefficiencies of cross-border payments by providing fast, flexible pre-funding options at lower costs than traditional fiat systems. The startup’s offering allows payment companies to settle transactions and fund customer accounts instantly, improving cash flow while avoiding the delays and high costs associated with liquidity shortages. With global cross-border payments projected to reach $290.2 trillion annually by 2030, Mansa’s model stands to significantly reduce operational costs and remittance fees in emerging markets. Mansa has already processed nearly $31 million in transactions since its launch six months ago, achieving a 37.5% monthly growth rate and expects to reach a $1 billion total payment volume (TPV) run rate this year. The company’s clients, which include B2B payment platforms, virtual card providers, forex platforms, and remittance companies, have reported a 30% increase in transaction volumes and a 10% revenue boost since onboarding. Looking ahead, Mansa aims to evolve into a comprehensive payment platform, providing not only liquidity but also foreign exchange and seamless transaction settlements — an on-chain version of Stripe for emerging markets. Tether CEO Paolo A. praised the partnership, emphasizing Mansa’s role in reshaping global payment infrastructure by making Tether the primary stablecoin in these rapidly growing regions. This funding includes a $3M pre-seed round led by Tether.io and co-led by Polymorphic Capital, with participation from Octerra Capital , Faculty Group, and TRIVE. An additional $7M in liquidity funding comes from institutional investors, including corporate investors and quantitative funds. MANSA leverages stablecoins to provide instant liquidity solutions, reducing settlement delays and transaction costs for payment providers. Since launching in August 2024, the company has processed $27M in transactions, with on-chain transaction volume growing by 574%. "Is this what you guys call hockey stick growth?" When Sebastian Cheek, seasoned investor and dear friend from Faculty Group, first spoke to me about MANSA in late 2024, there was a certain excitement in his voice. Mouloukou S. and Nkiru Uwaje weren't just building another fintech - they were revolutionising cross-border payments, leveraging stablecoins to close liquidity gaps and build more accessible and efficient financial infrastructure. With huge market demand and a clear need for a better solution, it was an easy decision to back them. Fast forward to a month ago, Mo and I were reviewing the latest numbers on a call - 574% growth since August 2024 (a staggering 37.5% compounded monthly growth rate), with nearly $11 million in transactions in January alone. That’s when Mo asked, "Is this what you guys call hockey stick growth?" I chuckled, but the answer was obvious.
