Making Waves for a Cleaner Coast! This past Sunday, 30 dedicated volunteers joined us at White Horse Beach for #InternationalBeachCleanupDay, where we collected 23 bags of trash weighing approximately 100 pounds! It was a great day of teamwork, contributing to the health of our coastlines and ensuring a safer environment for both people and wildlife. White Horse Beach, located just a stone’s throw from Manomet’s headquarters, was the perfect spot to bring our community together. We cleaned up and had the opportunity to chat with neighbors about the changes they’ve seen on the coast over the years. The global impact of this event is inspiring! In 2023, almost half a million volunteers cleaned over 16,000 miles of coastline and removed nearly 8 million pounds of trash worldwide. Here in Massachusetts, COASTSWEEP saw over 3,000 volunteers remove nearly 12 tons of trash. Locally, last year at White Horse Beach, we collected over 170 pounds of trash with 45 volunteers. This year, we kept up the momentum with 30 volunteers collecting 100 pounds of debris—without a single lobster trap in the mix for the first time! These numbers remind us that every effort counts, no matter how small. By coming together as a community, we’re making a tangible difference to our coastlines, protecting precious wildlife, and supporting a global movement toward cleaner oceans. In August, we had the pleasure of hosting two ornithology workshops at Manomet’s headquarters in Massachusetts: The Ornithological Career Institute and The Passerine Banding Fellowship. Manomet scientists Salvadora Morales and Evan Dalton, along with other Manomet staff, helped instruct six early-career professionals from six different countries in Latin America! Thank you, Pablo Gigy Gregoret (Argentina), for sharing your experience. Thank you, everyone, for making this possible! We look forward to hosting more workshops like these in 2025!

The last piece of the puzzle! Here, you can see Manomet’s Shorebird team, with partners from the U.S. Geological Survey and Mississippi State University, setting up for the evening’s attempt to band young Whimbrels on Cape Cod. The team is working on filling in the last piece of this species’ migration puzzle: understanding how and where juvenile birds make it through the early years of life. Once the puzzle is complete, we can understand where and when conservation actions are needed to improve the life-supporting conditions on the ground for this and all shorebirds. How will this work? We are deploying small solar-powered transmitters in Massachusetts on young Whimbrel migrating for the first time. These transmitters will not only tell us the location of the birds while they move around Cape Cod, but also everywhere the birds go in the following months and years. Each young Whimbrel will leave the Cape toward the end of September and fly non-stop out over the Atlantic for about four days, a flight totaling over 2,500 miles over open water before they arrive in South America. The young birds will spend two to three years on their tropical non-breeding grounds before returning north as adults to nest on the Arctic tundra for the first time. Congratulations to Eden Barletta of Suffolk University! Eden was named Manomet's 2024 Next Generation Scholar at our recent U360 Commencement and Capstone Competition for her Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) for a garden center in the Northeast. A big round of applause also goes to our other student finalists, Umaima Ahmed of Georgetown University in Qatar for her SAP on a confectionery in Pakistan, and Caroline Fai of Yale University for her SAP on a nonprofit organization in the Southwest. Thanks to our judges for their enthusiastic and careful consideration during this special event. Congratulations to the entire U360 Class of 2024 for a wonderful year!
