??Extinction of the Slender-billed Curlew Highlights Urgent Need for Global Shorebird Conservation The Slender-billed Curlew, a migratory shorebird that once graced the wetlands of western Siberia and the Mediterranean, has been declared extinct, marking a sobering milestone: the first recorded global bird extinction from mainland Europe, North Africa, and West Asia. This tragic loss is a stark reminder of the challenges facing bird species worldwide, with the IUCN Red List now recognizing 164 bird extinctions since 1500. This news comes as the latest update to the IUCN Red List reveals alarming trends for migratory shorebirds. Sixteen species have been reclassified to higher threat categories, with some populations declining by over a third in recent decades. A study published in Ornithological Applications by Stephen Brown, PhD, Vice President of Science at Manomet Conservation Sciences, highlights that more than half of North American shorebird species have experienced population declines of 50% since 1980, with losses accelerating in recent generations. “This development is a wakeup call for coordinated conservation efforts to reverse species declines and restore essential habitats across shorebird flyways” said Rob Clay, PhD, Vice President of Flyways at Manomet. The extinction of the Slender-billed Curlew serves as a chilling preview of what’s at stake if urgent action isn’t taken to protect shorebirds and their habitats. Habitat loss, climate change, and other stressors are pushing more species toward the brink. Manomet Conservation Sciences is calling for enhanced collaboration among governments, scientists, and local communities to combat these threats and safeguard the ecosystems that shorebirds represent. The loss of one species underscores the fragility of many others. Now is the time for bold, unified efforts to halt this downward spiral and secure a future for shorebirds worldwide. We want to say THANK YOU to everyone who participated in, or donated to, this year’s Bird-a-Thon! Whether you birded with us on the bluff, or shared an eBird checklist from elsewhere, you were a vital part of our team! At our Big Sit at HQ, we saw 50 species in 5 hours. In total, we received 102 checklists from 3 countries and saw 248 Species from 39 eBird users! Well done, everyone!?? It’s not too late to submit your checklist from Oct. 12th or 13th (just share with user “Manomet BAT”), or donate! Your contributions support our bird banding lab, and contribute to community science! This was our 46th year of Bird-a-thon, and the biggest turnout we’ve had at HQ in quite a while! We estimated about 50 people stopped by to help us identify birds, do arts and crafts, listen to a story, and chat with fellow bird-appreciators. Some highlights include: A Red-headed Woodpecker at our headquarters property, which was the first seen here since 2008! We also had 11 new species for our BAT-all-time List, including: King Rail, Suiriri Flycatcher and Eurasian Crag Martin! Other highlights include hot cider, coffee, and pancakes :)
