As climate change accelerates and urban populations grow, green building has become more essential than ever. How we design, construct, and operate buildings has a major impact on the environment, public health, and financial well-being. Here’s why sustainable housing is no longer just an option, it's a necessity. Fighting Climate Change – Buildings account for nearly 40% of global carbon emissions. Green building reduces this footprint through energy-efficient materials, solar power, and sustainable construction. Lowering Utility Costs – Eco-friendly homes use better insulation and efficient appliances, reducing energy bills for homeowners and renters. Improving Health & Well-Being – Low-VOC paints, proper ventilation, and non-toxic materials improve indoor air quality. Reducing Water Waste – Low-flow faucets, water-efficient landscaping, and rainwater collection systems help conserve water. Creating More Resilient Communities – Sustainable homes withstand extreme weather and reduce long-term damage. Protecting Natural Resources – Using recycled and locally sourced materials prevents deforestation and resource depletion. Manna, Inc.'s Commitment to Green Building- At Manna, we prioritize eco-friendly, energy-efficient housing. From bioretention facilities at Oramenta Gardens to green roofs at Longfellow DC (image of our roof at Longfellow below). We are committed to protecting people and the planet on Earth Day, and every day. #SustainableLiving #GreenBuilding #EarthDay2025 #MannaHomesDC #GreenBuildingDC #WashingtonDCAffordableHousing

Our March gathering of the East of the River Home Buyers Club was packed with residents eager to learn about the homebuying process. We had an incredible session with Catrina & Royal Purvis, Sr. from Purvis Realty Group. They shared valuable insight about the local real estate market, answered questions about the home buying process for first-time homebuyers, offered advice on what to look for in a real estate agent, and empowered attendees to take the next steps toward homeownership. Don’t worry if you missed it—our monthly Home Buyers Club will meet on Saturday, April 26th with Realtor Tierra Willard. See you there! https://lnkd.in/epa4-jRK #HomeOwnershipSupport #HomeBuyersClub #MannaPrograms #EOTRHBC #EOTR #mannaincdc #mannahomesdc

Did you know? Manna, Inc.'s historic Whitelaw Building was featured in The Green Book! A Landmark of Black Excellence: Built in 1919, the Whitelaw Hotel was Washington, DC's first luxury hotel and apartment building for Black residents during segregation. It provided a safe and welcoming space for Black travelers who faced discrimination elsewhere, hosting legendary figures like Duke Ellington and Joe Louis. Located at 1839 13th Street NW, the Whitelaw was developed by John Whitelaw Lewis, an African American entrepreneur, and designed by Isaia T. Hatton, one of DC’s first licensed Black architects. It became an important cultural hub during the 1920s–1940s, attracting prominent figures like Cab Calloway and other luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance. The surrounding U Street corridor was the epicenter of African American vitality during this time. The Green Book Connection: The Whitelaw was listed in Victor Green’s Green Book (1936–1967), a crucial travel guide for Black Americans during segregation, helping them find safe accommodations. The Green Book was also the subject of a 2019 Academy Award-winning film that won Best Original Screenplay, Best Picture, and Best Supporting Actor. Manna’s Restoration and Preservation: In the 1990s, Manna, Inc. restored the Whitelaw, transforming it into affordable housing while preserving its rich history. A $3.8 million rehabilitation maintained architectural details like the original marble stairs, decorative plasterwork, and distinctive facade. The ballroom, now a community space, continues to host gatherings, carrying forward a legacy of connection. Recognizing its historical significance, the Whitelaw was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Manna collaborated with local preservationists, community leaders, and former residents to document its history through oral histories and photographs. Much of this history is displayed in "the Ballroom," which remains a vibrant part of the community today. A Lasting Legacy: Though no longer a luxury hotel, the Whitelaw remains a home—a place of community, history, and resilience. As we celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth, we honor its role in providing safe spaces for Black excellence and preserving history. #BHM #TheGreenBook #DCBlackHistory #HistoricWhitelaw #MannaIncDC #AffordableHousing #CommunityLegacy

President & CEO at Manna Inc.

As we step into 2025, I'm incredibly proud to reflect on the remarkable strides we made in 2024, and even more excited about what lies ahead. At Manna Homes, our mission is simple yet profound: to create equitable, sustainable housing and open doors to homeownership. Every family we empower, every home we build, and every community we uplift brings us closer to a brighter future. Last year wasn't without its hurdles, but Team Manna showed what resilience and determination can achieve. Here are just a few of our highlights: 🏠 54 first-time homeowners created and 500+ families/individuals supported through our array of housing programs, and key collaborations with JPMorganChase #DCHousingAuthority #DCDHCD and #CapitalBank 💰 $114,000 awarded in "last mile" funding for closing cost and downpayment assistance through private partnerships with Building Bridges Across the River, GEICO and Target. 📊 85% retention rate: Our new Homeownership Impact Study revealed that the majority of Manna homeowners over the last 12 years are still thriving in their homes. 🤝 Policy wins: Collaborated with nonprofits, housing providers, and advocates to reform the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), ensuring effective support for those in need. 💰Innovation in Financial Health: Through support from Wells Fargo, Target, and PNC, we created a new Savings Match and Debt Reduction Program with 60 participants currently enrolled. 🌱 Expanded our reach through partnership with Orca Housing, LLC to preserve100 affordable housing units for seniors and families in Dayton, OH. 🏫 Allocated and closed $15 million in New Market Tax Credits (NMTCs) from the Jubilee-Manna CDE for re-development of Cedar Tree Academy. This year we are stepping up with a bold vision to deepen our impact by: - Growing beyond borders to tackle housing challenges in more communities. - Innovating in Financial Capabilities to create social impact that help families thrive. - Building stronger partnerships to create lasting change in the housing ecosystem. To our community, partners, champions and NeighborWorks America: thank you for joining us along this journey. Here's to supporting families, building communities, and making this a year to remember! #AffordableHousing #SocialImpact #CommunityDevelopment #Homeownership #FinancialEmpowerment #Partnership #Housing #MannaHomes Below are just a few members of our small but mighty team... with gratitude, HNY!
