The water department is expected to begin Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) the first week of April. This year the Main Zone will be flushed, which will likely take several months due to how large the zone is. UDF is an important maintenance process to clean and improve the carrying capacity of our water distribution system. By opening and closing pre-determined valves, staff are able to flush the main to remove any potential sediment build-up, which cleans the water main. Signs will be posted where flushing is occurring and notification flyers will be sent out to those potentially affected. To learn more about this process, please visit https://lnkd.in/gFUQXVYW.?

MPU recently began work on a significant project at the Wastewater Treatment Facility. A Master Plan study indicated that the nearly 50-year-old stack filters and final clarifiers need to be upgraded. The stack filters provide most of the wastewater treatment and the final clarifiers remove suspended solids before the treated water is discharged. How does the full treatment process actually work? Check out our video: https://lnkd.in/gquM45d8.

MPU’s General Manager, Troy Adams, along with Commissioner’s Dan Hornung, Scott McMeans, Eric Sitkiewitz, and Mayor Justin Nickels, attended the American Public Power Association (APPA)'s Legislative Rally in Washington D.C. this past week. Over three days, MPU attended 9 congressional meetings to discuss utility industry topics such as the protection of municipal bonds, elective payment tax credits to keep electricity affordable, electric reliability, energy permitting reform, and supply chain issues. Additional discussions occurred regarding our Manitowoc Refuel Renewable Project with a focus on the benefits for our community and our upcoming initiatives. We’re grateful for this time with legislatures to advocate for the needs of our #PublicPower customers.

Throwback to 1916 on Columbus Street. The building to the left of the tall stack housed the pumping station, generator room, and boiler house. To the right of the stack is the original waterworks utility pumping station and the engineer’s residence. The hill in the background would later be the site of Lincoln High School.

MPU supports the Right of First Refusal (ROFR) bill that has been introduced in the Wisconsin legislature. The bill addresses the rights of incumbent transmission facility owners to construct, own, and maintain certain transmission lines, especially those shared regionally. MPU’s main focus is always the interests of our customers and community; a ROFR will appropriately allocate costs and save Wisconsinite’s money, which is why we support this bill. Learn more about the benefits in our press release here: https://lnkd.in/g7ragCh9.?

MPU has learned about the passing of former Commissioner, Dave Luckow. Dave faithfully served the community as a member of our Commission for 22 years. During his tenure, Dave was a part of many momentous projects including the installation of Boiler 9, construction of multiple facilities needed to service the Central Brown County Water Authority, and the initiation of the Manitowoc Refuel Renewable Project. We’re so grateful for his strategic leadership and dedication to our community. Our heartfelt condolences extend to his family as they mourn this loss.?

Last week, MPU’s General Manager, Troy Adams, Chief Innovation Officer, Andy Onesti, and Commissioners Scott McMeans and Dan Hornung, as well as Mayor Justin Nickels, attended the Municipal Electric Utilities of Wisconsin's Day at the Capitol. They had an opportunity to share about our Manitowoc Refuel Renewable Project as well as advocate for the best interests of our #PublicPower customers relating to Right of First Refusal for transmission construction projects, Public Service Commission workload, and Community Solar development. We’re grateful to Wisconsin State Representative David Steffen, Senator Howard Marklein's staff, Wisconsin State Representative Paul Tittl, and Senator Devin LeMahieu for spending time with us.
