Gearing Up To Become a Global Filipino Water Company

关于我们

Manila Water Company, Inc. is a publicly listed company with extensive experience in the Philippine Water Sector from water treatment and distribution to wastewater management and sanitation services. The Company is the concessionaire of the state-run Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System to deliver water supply, wastewater, and sanitation services in the East Zone concession in Metro Manila and the province of Rizal, serving over 7.3 million population. In 2021, the Company was granted a 25-year franchise to operate by the Philippine Government. Prior to Manila Water’s entry in 1997, the East Zone suffered from various water problems with only 26% of the area’s population having access to 24-hour water supply. Manila Water’s efforts to expand distribution lines and reduce system losses increased water availability to nearly 100% of the central distribution system and non-revenue water (NRW) register from 63% to an average of 13%, unprecedented in the country’s water space. Nearly two million people from marginalized communities were given access to clean and affordable water through the company’s flagship program – Water for the Community. Locally, Manila Water has expanded its reach and shared its expertise to top metros and key cities in the Philippines which include the famed beach destination Boracay Island, the gateway to the southern corridor Laguna Province, the international business hub of Clark, the Queen City of Southern Philippines Cebu Province, and further down south in Davao, among others. Manila Water has also forayed into the international water landscape through its business operations in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Our #GlobalWaterAwards shortlist run through is coming to an end with the final category, SDG6 Champion of the Year! This award honours the impactful initiatives bringing clean water and sanitation to all. ?? First up is Boracay Island Water Company, a utility?serving over 1.4 million people on Boracay Island in the Philippines. It's a joint venture company of Manila Water, with Manila Water Philippine Ventures & Asia Pacific, and Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority. By reducing non-revenue water to 19%, they eased dependence on the Nabaoy River, Boracay's only freshwater source. They also lowered their energy efficiency index from 0.54 to 0.42 kWh/m3 over 2021-2024, saving $292,727 in energy costs. ? This facilitated investing in the Manocmanoc Sewage Treatment Plant, converting it into membrane bioreactor with biological nutrient removal, and expanding sewer coverage to 7,329 households and commercial establishments. BIWC's initiative ensures that Boracay remains a top tourist destination - crucial to local and countrywide revenue - by securing clean water, promoting responsible tourism, and preserving the island's fragile marine ecosystem. Learning from Boracay's 2018 island-wide closure due to environmental degradation, BIWC proves that driving efficiency & improving sustainable water management catalyses both economic and environmental gains. Celebrate the companies that are pioneering on SDG6 – the sustainable development goal that relies on our #watersector. Head to our website to vote, before results are announced live at #GWS2025. #SDG6 #Waterindustry #Tourism?

As a key advocate of the amendments in Retail Aggregation Program (RAP), Manila Water has taken a pioneering step in securing cost-efficient electricity, becoming the first pilot entity to switch from captive to contestable market under the expanded RAP on February 7, 2025. Manila Water further strengthens the implementation of its monthly desludging program in 2024. In the said year, Manila Water emptied a total of 129,420 septic tanks, higher than its record of 117,075 tanks siphoned in 2023. Manila Water attributes this feat to the proactive implementation of its desludging caravan and expansion of its advocacy program Toka Toka, which promotes proper management of wastewater in every household as an important share (or "toka") in reviving our rivers and waterways.
