Best Engineering Career Advice (that I ever got!) as we finish 2024. Get a Mentor! There are a lot of different types of career advice. As an engineering recruiter, I talk to many engineers on a weekly basis. Many of these engineers are earlier career professionals looking for new challenges and growth opportunities. One regular comment I hear is that many engineers lack mentorship or a support network. This is exacerbated by a growing number of retirements, difficulty of hiring replacements, and the rise of hybrid work which decreases interactions. So my advice to any engineer, early career or not, is to seek and find a mentor. This mentor needs to be an experienced engineer and someone that you trust. He or she doesn’t necessarily need to be a co-worker working for the same employer as you are. Forbes lists 15 invaluable traits that make a good mentor. The key ones that I think are important qualities follow: - Supportiveness - Follow-Through - Transparency - Good Listener - Focus on the Mentee For the full list of traits, read the full article at Forbes https://lnkd.in/enXGiM2m With 2024 coming to a close, there’s not much time left in the year to find a mentor who will become a key partner in your overall career success.
