Best Engineering Career Advice (that I ever got!) as we finish 2024. Get a Mentor! There are a lot of different types of career advice. As an engineering recruiter, I talk to many engineers on a weekly basis. Many of these engineers are earlier career professionals looking for new challenges and growth opportunities. One regular comment I hear is that many engineers lack mentorship or a support network. This is exacerbated by a growing number of retirements, difficulty of hiring replacements, and the rise of hybrid work which decreases interactions. So my advice to any engineer, early career or not, is to seek and find a mentor. This mentor needs to be an experienced engineer and someone that you trust. He or she doesn’t necessarily need to be a co-worker working for the same employer as you are. Forbes lists 15 invaluable traits that make a good mentor. The key ones that I think are important qualities follow: - Supportiveness - Follow-Through - Transparency - Good Listener - Focus on the Mentee For the full list of traits, read the full article at Forbes https://lnkd.in/enXGiM2m With 2024 coming to a close, there’s not much time left in the year to find a mentor who will become a key partner in your overall career success.

M-Works Search Engineering Video Friday. John Deere. An American global agricultural and construction equipment giant. Last week, I highlighted Caterpillar, a global giant with roots in Central Illinois. I couldn’t not highlight John Deere, another global giant with roots right down the road in western Illinois. John Deere is the largest agricultural machinery maker in the world today. It all began in 1837 when John Deere opened a blacksmith shop in Grand Detour, IL. It was here that he invented a new plow blade from an old saw blade that was self-scouring. Thanks to its new shape and material, the plow blade didn’t need to be frequently cleaned of the rich local soil. So sit back and take a walk through the history of John Deere. https://buff.ly/40Y5TEf M-Works Search-Working to identify the best manufacturing professionals?

Build Your Engineering Portfolio-Don’t delay. You’re an engineer not an artist. Why do you need to build and maintain a portfolio? It’s pretty simple, like an artist, as an engineering professional you need to be able to provide examples to demonstrate your experience and accomplishments as needed. Whether you are looking for a new job or getting ready for your annual performance review, having an engineering portfolio will help you land a new job or get an increase. What should you include in your engineering portfolio? There’s no right or wrong answer, here. Yet, think of everything you do and or have done which helps your employer increase sales or decrease costs. Most, if not all, of your accomplishments in your engineering portfolio should be quantifiable. An example could be a new product design and the incremental sales it generated. It may be an innovation that was patented and allowed your employer to pursue new markets or business. Or it could be a new manufacturing process that reduces production costs. Organize all of your accomplishments, update your Linked In profile, and keep things updated so that your engineering profile is ready. Do you have an engineering portfolio? I’m curious to learn how many engineers have and maintain an engineering portfolio. It’s a tool that you should always have in your engineering career toolbox. Let me know your experience in comments.
