Content Marketing's First Alt-Weekly
关于我们
Welcome to content marketing’s alt-weekly. If you enjoy working in content marketing, but could still do with about 75% less of the corporate bullshit that comes with it, we made Managing Editor for you. We’re a home for the changemakers, culture creators, leaders, disruptors, innovators and mavericks in brand journalism and content marketing. And, no, we don’t care about your email newsletter best practices. We do want to hear about how you felt when you realized you had written 250,000 words about employment assessments in two years under someone else’s name. But could never find time to write your own book. Or how you explain your job to your parents, who still think you “work at the newspaper.” We’d also love to hear about the special Spotify playlist you’ve created for those days you have to navigate the minefield of that one special SME’s “white papers.” Managing Editor is nurtured and loved by the team at Rep Cap, a B2B content marketing agency that provides content marketing for progressive professional services firms and consultants. We welcome contributions from content marketers who have something interesting to say about our emerging profession. We like profiles of creative people who like shaking things up, contrary perspectives, and poking holes in anything that “everybody knows.” We do not like "syndicated" content, backlink schemes or tired-ass listicles. Most articles on Managing Editor run from 750 to 1,500 words, but if you’re on a roll and you’re not boring, we won’t cut you off. You may recommend (or pan) specific vendors, but you must disclose any business relationship you have with the company in question. Or their competitors. Got something you need to say? Drop us a line at [email protected].

Most performance reviews focus on fixing weaknesses. But what if you doubled down on your strengths instead? That’s exactly what fio D.’s manager encouraged her to do at Hotjar in 2017 — and it changed her approach to work. Instead of spending time trying to improve the things she was average at, she leaned into what she excelled at. The result? More impact, more energy and a clearer career path. How are you leveraging your unique abilities? #ContentCareers #CareerGrowth #Leadership

As we discovered in our recent chat with Jenn Riek, the best content ideas don’t always come from a brainstorming session. Sometimes, they come from a random conversation, a favorite hobby, or even customer complaints. Where do your ideas come from?! It’s easy to see negative feedback as a headache, but as Jenn R. pointed out in our recent conversation, every complaint is an opportunity. When someone takes the time to tell you what’s wrong, they’re choosing to engage instead of walking away. That means you have a chance to: ? Listen and learn ? Provide solutions or education ? Turn frustration into loyalty Surveys, polls, and direct conversations may bring tough feedback, but they also reveal what truly matters to your customers. The brands that embrace this mindset? They don’t just fix problems — they build stronger, more engaged communities. Check out the full conversation at the link in comments! #CustomerExperience #ContentMarketing #BrandLoyalty

Storytelling is a game-changer for content — especially when you use a framework like the Before-After Bridge. In our interview with Erica Schneider, founder of Cut the Fluff, she breaks down the power of this approach. One of the most common hooks? "I used to feel blank until I blank." (As in, "I used to feel tired until I quit coffee.") This structure grabs attention, shows the transformation, and gives your audience a clear picture of the potential change they could experience. Plus, it helps make your content feel personal and relatable, which is key to engaging readers. #Storytelling #ContentWriting #Copywriting

The best content ideas come from the things you actually enjoy. Jenn R. shared a great example from her time at Evernote — where a simple love for movies turned into a creative marketing campaign. Instead of a generic product promo, she wrote “Movies That Could Have Been Avoided with Evernote” — imagining how simply setting up a recurring task (like checking the T. rex enclosure in Jurassic Park) could have changed the entire plot. The takeaway? The best ideas come from what excites you. Whether it’s movies, music, or everyday conversations, inspiration is everywhere. What’s the most unexpected place you’ve found a content idea? #ContentMarketing #Creativity #MarketingStrategy
