The Problem: Vacancies: There are tens of thousands of vacant teaching positions across the United States. Sources vary, but numbers in the tens of thousands are regularly reported. Reports indicate that many schools operate with at least one teaching vacancy. Underqualified Teachers: A significant number of teaching positions are filled by individuals who are not fully certified. This means that students may not always receive instruction from teachers with the necessary qualifications. High-Need Areas: The shortage is particularly acute in certain subject areas, such as: Special education, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics),Bilingual education, Schools in high-poverty areas and those with a high-minority student population are disproportionately affected by teacher shortages. Teacher Turnover and Burnout: A significant percentage of teachers express intentions to leave the profession within the next few years. Teacher burnout rates are high, with many educators experiencing significant stress and difficulty coping with their job-related demands. Hiring difficulties: 86% of public schools struggle to hire educators.
