Raised voices singing along with the melody, heat from so many bodies thickening the air. Everything is beautiful noise and static hum and it’s reaching a fever pitch. Skilled fingers press guitar strings with memorized patterns and the combination of sound is near perfection. Tonight The Requisite is playing for Seattle, for new friends, for family, and for each other. In real life each member of the band has their day job—Sam’s a Project Manager, Max hand rolls cigars, Tommy‘s a dog walker, and Matt owns a painting company—and tonight? Tonight is also real life, and the music has become the ultimate celebration of existence. Matt is completely immersed, strumming away with wild abandon, reverberating with a rightness that will feed his soul for days to come. He plays the guitar the same way he does everything: with passion. With boldness. With dedication. With purpose. When Matt Houghton picked up a guitar at the age of thirteen it became his world. “That was always my thing in high school,” he shares, “I didn’t study or plan to go to college, I just played guitar.” Earning an associate’s degree in Guitar Performance was a feather in the cap of the aspiring musician, and while it was a fun pursuit, music wasn’t paying the bills so Matt took a job with College Pro Painters right out of high-school. It’s just for the summer, he said to himself as one summer became two, finally pulling himself away from painting before the industry could take hold of him completely. Matt took a job at UPS and his leadership skills began to develop. For five years he worked there, learning the ropes of logistics and people management at UPS and working summers at a locally owned painting company, Tera Painting.
