We’re officially halfway through the 2024-25 cycle!? ? We just finished our third Influencer Circle sessions on ‘Health in the Workplace’, focusing on two key gender-specific health topics that are often overlooked - menstruation and menopause. Approximately 40% of women who experience high levels of pain due to menstruation or menopause work through it without seeking help or taking time off (Deloitte Women at Work, 2024 - see link in comments). As Male Allies, what can we do to change this and create a more inclusive and supportive workplace??? ? Using 2 case studies, our participants brainstormed how to lead these important, but often uncomfortable, conversations around health matters and provide meaningful support. Some ideas included organising informal catch-ups outside of the office, familiarising yourself with existing company offerings, and ensuring transparent communication across the team. Check out the case studies below - what would you do as the manager? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.? ? Leading comfortable conversations applies not just to health matters, but to any challenge your team may be facing. Don’t underestimate the power of kindness and compassion in leadership!? ? A huge thank you to our IC Leads for guiding these conversations and to our volunteers for hosting the sessions.? Last month, we started 2025 with our second Influencer Circles sessions on “Privilege and Identities”. ?As male allies, we gathered together to reflect ourselves’ privilege and discriminations and share our thoughts on building a more gender equality workplace and society in new year. A huge thanks to our 8 fabulous IC leads for facilitating the sessions and to our participants who hosted us in their offices. In these sessions, participants explored the concept of intersectionality - how our complex identities, in terms of race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, ability and other factors, translate into different experiences of privilege and prejudice at work. By reflecting on our own privileges and adopting an approach of internationality to listen and understand the diverse challenges colleagues face, we can start to dismantle these barriers and create a truly inclusive and equitable workplace. The journey to gender equality may be tough, and it would even be more complicated when we adopt intersectionality in our everyday life. Nevertheless, we know, as male allies, it will not only help us to understand ourselves and others, but also a more supportive and inclusive workplace will benefit everyone. For the first Male Allies alumni event of 2025, we were delighted to host a lunchtime discussion with Bonnie Hayden Cheng, author of The Return on Kindness and member of our Male Allies Leadership Council.? ? In this inspiring conversation, we explored how kindness serves as an equalizer, leveling the playing field at work for gendered perceptions of leadership, and how it transcends mere niceness in leadership by embodying a deeper and more impactful approach to guiding and inspiring others. We also discussed the importance of leadership modeling and championing acts of kindness to create a more caring and inclusive work culture. ? ?? Together, let’s start the new year by championing kindness in the workplace and beyond! A huge thank you to ANZ for hosting us at your office and to Bonnie Hayden Cheng and Claire Goodchild ????? for organising the session. Alex Barnes Byron Phillips Jason S. We officially kicked-off the 2024-25 cycle with our first Influencer Circle sessions on ‘Redefining Masculinity’. A huge thank you to our 8 IC Leads for facilitating the sessions and to our participants who hosted us in their offices. During our sessions, we delved into the concept of the ‘Man Box’ - the rigid and traditional set of beliefs about what it means to ‘be a man’. Our participants explored how generational and cultural factors contribute to the Man Box, and the negative effects on men and those around them. By reflecting on these social norms and expectations, we began the process of redefining masculinity in healthier, more inclusive ways. As we continue on this journey to inclusive leadership, how will you commit to challenging traditional societal norms and embracing gender-equitable mindsets? At the latest Male Allies alumni lunch, our guest speaker Dr Iris Lo, Assistant Professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, led an interactive discussion on AI, social media and gender equality. It was an energising dialogue with allies in the room sharing insights on the spectrum of gender socialisation and its impact on mindset and choices, and the importance to change mindset that will empower allies to make a positive change at workplaces, in the communities and at home. Our gratitude goes to Dr Iris Lo for being our guest speaker, to JLL and Alex Barnes for the generous hosting and to Jason S. Lui, CFA, Lani Tao and Byron Phillips for the invaluable behind the scenes support. Bonnie Hayden Cheng Claire Goodchild ????? Paul Ho Paul Clarke Praveen Choudhary Raymond Leung Sakshi K. Amy V. Join us to engage the next generation of Hong Kongers as champions for Gender Equality? ? TWF has been at the forefront of recognising?that people of all genders, including men, have a critical role to play in addressing gender inequality. ?? Given our 2021 masculinities research found that over 75% of young men hold conservative views on gender equality, we knew that we had to take action to change these perceptions. This is why last year we launched our Young Allies Pilot Programme. ? Twenty male university students participated in?workshops on topics like privilege and allyship, and some had the opportunity to participate in DEI-focused work-shadowing. TWF Male Allies served as their mentors, utilising their skills to deepen participants’ understanding of gender equality. All of these elements working together gave young men support and skills to become champions of gender equality. ? The preliminary results have exceeded our expectations – watch our video and hear the impact: ? Interested in partnering with us for the first cohort of the Young Allies Programme launching this Autumn??Reach out to?[email protected]?to learn more! #twfhk #genderequality #maleallies #youngallies
