I spent this morning representing MakingChange, Inc at Zion Church's 2024 College & Career Fair talking to parents and students about Making Money Moves in discussing options to pay for college and students making that shift to start working on their financial behaviors (if they haven't already). With over $1.74 trillion in student loan debt in the U.S., we have to start being intentional and proactive about steering clear of debt and planning ahead. Fundraising can be a tough "thing" but it really doesn't have to be. When I first joined MakingChange, Inc as the Executive Director, my first mission was to find out where funding was coming from and how we could diversify those funding streams. Relationship building and my experience in this arena helped prepare me for that process. The Board of Directors spent some time today learning about how to "Take the Fear Out of Fundraising" and there was no better experienced professional to bring this information other than Kim Patton with Association of Community Services. If your organization is interested in this type of capacity building, I strongly recommend setting up a training.

What a busy weekend MakingChange, Inc out in the community. On Friday, Durshawn held her first financial education workshop to Wilde Lake students participating in the 2024-2025 after school program. This project is in partnership with the Wilde Lake Community Association. Thank you to Sharon Kerr, Executive Director of WLCA, and the WLCA Board of Directors for bringing this vision to fruition. Yesterday, Sharee distributed 40 Chromebooks to Howard County households. With just 4 distribution dates left, we are looking forward to distribution the remaining 500 Chromebooks out. Thank you to everyone who is helping us spread the word. Let's see what this new week will bring for the team!

I spent some time this morning talking with Cris Oviedo about MakingChange, Inc and financial wellness. The question that has stayed with me all day is "at what age should we start talking about finances with our children?" My answer is and will remain that we should talk with our children at all ages! There are so many resources available from kindergarten through adulthood that we don't have to wait or "protect" our children from learning how to handle money. By starting this practice early and openly discussing money with your children, you are giving them the invaluable benefit and experience to help them stay on the right track to be financially responsible and self-sufficient.
