Amtrak trains on several routes have been canceled after the company removed its fleet of Horizon passenger cars from service because of corrosion concerns, raising the possibility of long-term service disruptions. In a statement issued at 9 a.m. today (March 26, 2025), the company said, “We discovered corrosion in several Horizon railcars and, while working with the manufacturer, decided to remove the equipment from service after learning of additional areas of concern from intensive inspections of multiple cars. Removing this equipment from service will affect services on several routes:?Downeaster,?Hiawatha,?Borealis, and?Amtrak Cascades. Some trains, such as the?Downeaster, will operate with fewer cars, while other services will be provided substitute transportation until a long-term plan is developed.” https://lnkd.in/dtEfxViB

Well worth listening and sharing!
Before there were cars, planes, cybertrucks, and electric unicycles—there were trains. People rode trains to get just about everywhere, from work, school, and daily errands, to holiday getaways at the national parks. As Meredith Richards of Rail Passengers Association, one of our guests in this episode, puts it, “Trains were simply the way people traveled.” So what happened to our once-great passenger rail system? How did the U.S. become so car-dependent that many Americans today ride trains for the first time when they travel abroad? In this first of two episodes on passenger rail, we learn about how railroads once connected us all, how public investment in other modes of transportation—but not in railroads—gradually undermined rail travel, and why in 1971 the government eventually took passenger service off the hands of the privately-owned railroads. This is very important reading!
Amtrak makes our jobs as advocates more difficult when they allow this kind of thing to happen. VIA Rail Canada isn't having these issues with their LD fleet order. Perhaps Amtrak should go to single-level equipment and do a joint order with VIA. It would save both companies money https://lnkd.in/g-WEA79G

The election of Donald Trump could significantly reduce future financial support for Amtrak, transit, and high speed rail projects, although expected cuts could be tempered if Democrats are able to capture enough still-undecided House of Representatives races to gain a majority in that chamber. That’s the consensus of sources Trains News Wire contacted Wednesday, though some declined to express their views publicly. https://lnkd.in/g6QSrT5A
