Last week's announcement from Milbank about year-end associate bonuses made the news across multiple publications. In The American Lawyer, Stephanie Biderman noted, "Given the history of these firms paying the same associate compensation, at least at the top of the market, my thought with what we were going to see happen this year was the other firms were going to kind of take that special bonus into their year-end bonus numbers. Time will tell, and we'll see if that's actually what happens." Darin Morgan commented on whether or not salary increases would follow, "That is hard to project. There have been several salary bumps in the 'Cravath scale' the past few years. While it is possible an industry leader raises salaries, there is also the option that someone may increase the bonus scale while leaving salaries static, or potentially offer special bonuses mid-year." https://bit.ly/4fD1bQH Bloomberg Law also wrote on the announcement and reached out to Ru Bhatt for input on how other BigLaw firms will respond, "The special bonuses that happened this summer were a surprise to most. Did the Dallas and Houston markets behave differently than the national findings in the 2024 Partner Compensation Survey? Texas Lawyer asked survey authors Karen A. Andersen and Louis Ramos for their input, and they reported that following a national trend, average partner billing rates improved significantly in Dallas and Houston in 2023, compared with 2021. Karen Andersen said a relatively small number of partners in Dallas and Houston responded to the survey, which may have affected the results, "Looking at the national number is a better way of looking at it. Regression analysis shows that origination is the biggest factor in compensation," she said. Louis Ramos noted, "For us, any insight into what the market is doing is always helpful. It's helpful for all of us at MLA when we are talking to potential candidates who are thinking of making a lateral move, letting them know what the market is telling us … and also helpful in terms of law firms in giving them some sense of where market compensation is," he said. https://bit.ly/40UXuRY #mlaglobal #partners #compensation #lawfirms
