"Specimens of Time, Albedo" (2024) is a dynamic light sculpture comprised of three parts, made to evoke the visceral essence of untouched polar landscapes. Optical materials, light and generative algorithms are used in its creation to capture the reflection of light off ice, which is known as albedo.

关于我们
Maja Petric Studio is the creative practice of Maja Petric, an interdisciplinary artist, and researcher. The studio produces boundary-pushing works, installations, and sculptures. It operates as a research and development lab, exploring new technologies and materials to push the boundaries of art. With a deep commitment to incorporating a humanistic dimension into technology, Maja has works with computer scientists to develop custom media that challenge our understanding of the world and our place in it. Innovative engineering, including real-time interactive systems, parametric video mixing, and AI, has been developed specifically for her projects. These custom technologies have been recognized in scientific publications and featured in international computer science conferences. Studio's artwork has been exhibited, commissioned, and presented internationally, including the FOR-SITE, Henry Art Gallery, Farol Santander, MASS MoCA, MadArt Studio The National Gallery London, and New York Times.

Maja Petric is an artist challenging you to think about what lies ahead. With her latest work “Synthetic Futures”, we found ourselves wondering if she might also be offering us all a glimpse of how light artists will interact with AI in the future? Petric’s “Synthetic Futures" are sketches of immersive light installations for the world to come, grappling with climate change. Petric has imagined art that utilises light and synthetic materials to emulate lush natural environments, in contrast to the barren reality that we may face. The sketches are made with help of AI. Image 1. Using dynamic light and optical materials to evoke surreal vegetation, offering an alternative reality amidst an environment destroyed by deforestation. Image 2. Sculpting ice with translucent materials and light during heatwave.? Image 3. Utilizing strong light piercing through the cracks of dry soil. Image 4. Employing light and atmospherics to depict a serene sunset amidst a harsh, polluted atmosphere and distressed weather. Each of Petric’s works begins by depicting the sublime elements of nature to draw people in, by evoking a universal and inherent connection with the environment. However, once immersed, the layers of her pieces reveal more challenging themes, encompassing depictions of mortality, interdependence, climate change, and collective action. An award winning artist, Petric has exhibited globally and holds a Ph.D. in Digital Arts and Experimental Media from the University of Washington and a Masters in Interactive Telecommunications from New York University. Art has always been a way for humans to express themselves, tell stories and learn from each other. Traditionally, the appreciation of art has always been considered an exclusively human skill, but with the technology now out there to create images and bring artistic ideas to life, is that taking away part of the true creativity of the process? Perhaps, if the technology was used Petric’s way -?her hand guiding every step of the process -?then it would not be the AI choosing our artistic future, it would still be us.
