Calling All Men: Be the Change! Join us in a powerful conversation about transforming the culture that enables violence against women. Every man in our families and communities—has a vital role in creating a world where women are safe and valued. Want to make a difference? Share your voice! Contact us at [email protected] to be interviewed for our Engaging Men Campaign and featured on our digital platforms. Let’s stand together for change!?#EngagingMEN
Through our #EngagingMenAndBoys campaign, we are engaging men in our community to identify and eliminate the root cause of gender-based violence and partner violence. Today's discussion with Pranav Acharya. Q: What are your thoughts about the division of labor or household chores in a couple or family situation? A: This is an area where I feel men can be more proactive in sharing the mental load. Instead of thinking that it is enough to just say they’re willing to “help” with household chores or do anything they’re told to do by their partner, men can more actively take ownership of such tasks. For example, men can take ownership of checking the pantry and fridge for groceries and going to shop themselves when items run low instead of waiting for their partner to tell them and hand them a grocery list. The same applies to other areas like cooking, cleaning laundry, event planning, etc. The issue is that while the physical labor may be divided evenly between both partners, the invisible mental load/labor has traditionally fallen on women. Men aren’t just helpers in the household, but equal participants and owners. A key part of addressing this issue involves men challenging the subconscious ideas that they have about gender roles in household labor and being willing to actively communicate and make extra efforts to share this responsibility. By doing this, men take one more step towards being better allies and breaking traditional gender roles.? Q: How men can be a good role model for future generations? A: It is the responsibility of men to model respectful behavior towards women and challenge masculine stereotypes. Men should model respectful behavior towards women in all aspects of their lives, whether it’s at home, school, workplace, or social settings with friends. This means making women feel heard instead of ignored, handling conflicts in healthy ways instead of resorting to aggression (including verbal), using respectful language instead of using derogatory language, and respecting women’s boundaries in every interaction. Men can challenge masculine stereotypes such as those that equate an aggressive personality with dominance/desirability and equate showing vulnerability with weakness/shame. Instead, they can embrace showing their emotions and vulnerability, and thereby learn that there are healthier ways to deal with struggles than to let it out in the form of aggression. This can even start in small ways, such as challenging the idea that it’s a massive blow to the ego to say sorry and admit that you are wrong in conversations with your partner and other women. Men can also challenge other men ........................... Read Pranav's full interview here:
