New research ?? “Measuring work attitudes with less: Supervised construct scoring to shorten work attitude measures” Researchers have long been interested in assessing employee work attitudes and perceptions. However, surveys measuring these constructs are often quite long, resulting in “survey fatigue” and prohibiting comprehensive measurement. This has led to the adoption of unvalidated measures, short measures with poor accuracy, or choosing to forgo assessment entirely. In an ideal world, researchers could measure work attitudes and perceptions using shorter scales that exhibit similar levels of accuracy as longer, previously validated measures. A recent paper by Angie Delacruz, Lauren Wegmeyer, PhD, and me tackled this challenge using a scale-shortening method called supervised construct scoring (SCS). SCS works through supervised modeling, where the original full-scale score serves as the target variable, and a reduced set of items—identified through content validity judgments—serve as input variables. An algorithm then weights the items to maximize the reproduction of the original full-scale scores, using all available short-form survey content. Across several data collections, we found that: · ?? SCS facilitates the development of shorter work attitude and perception surveys while preserving strong psychometric properties similar to full scale scores (e.g., correlated > .95 on average with full scale scores despite being 39% the number of items). ·???SCS outperformed single-item measures, though single-item measures also generally demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties. ·???We developed two measures that in total assess 20 work attitudes and perceptions (e.g., pay satisfaction, engagement) in approximately three minutes (using 32 items). The resulting scale/scoring algorithm are called the Short Work attitude and Perception Scales (SWAPS). Algorithms are freely accessible, enabling organizations to adopt efficient, concise surveys to enhance understanding and support workforce well-being.
