Gainesville is bustling with more than just college sports excitement. Through the Google News Initiative Reader Revenue Lab, the team at Mainstreet Daily News successfully launched a membership program in December 2023 that’s scoring big with readers and meaningfully contributing to the organization’s bottom line. J.C. Derrick, Olivia Hanna and Jonathan Killian took Blue Engine's guidance to heart in building a robust membership model that is already outpacing monthly member acquisition targets by 26% and delivering a 4x increase in customer lifetime value. ??Winning ideas: ???????????????????? ???? ????????????????-?????????? ?????????????? – ?????????? ???? ????.? The team developed and validated a membership concept through direct interviews with prospective members. Then, they used AI tools to sift through and analyze feedback, focusing on sentiment reflected by specific word choices. The AI sentiment analysis helped crystallize a compelling membership value proposition and suite of benefits that the team then edited for use in marketing messages. This approach led to better messaging and serious time savings. ?????????????? ????????????????, ?????????????????? ?????? ????????????????, ???? ?????????? ??????????????.? The membership program was launched with full organizational support, and staff took turns writing email marketing and newsletter messages to promote the program, highlighting Mainstreet’s impactful journalism as a driving reason to support membership. As one member wrote, “You’re bringing back investigative journalism to Gainesville, and I want to support that by becoming a member.” ?????????????????????? ?????????????????? ???????????? ??????????????. The membership program is designed to reward monthly or annual sustaining contributors due to strong retention and a 4x higher customer lifetime value compared to one-time donors. It prominently lists the benefits of membership right at the outset. ???????????????????? ?????? ????????????????????. The results are in: The 15 publishers in our latest Google News Initiative Reader Revenue Lab added an incremental $5.8M in three-year customer lifetime value, a median increase of 84% vs. pre-Lab baselines. We’re thrilled with the results of these dedicated and open-minded local news leaders. Pointers from this incredible cohort: 1?? Understand readers' needs and use those insights to create a clear and compelling value proposition. One team designed a subscriber and non-subscriber survey to better understand content areas on two dimensions – importance of topic vs. satisfaction of how the topic is covered – to illustrate the differences between subscriber and non-subscriber satisfaction visually. These insights helped the team understand content strengths and areas of emphasis for both acquisition and retention marketing. It was fast, economical, and wildly useful. 2?? Make informed decisions based on data – not gut or instinct – to improve the purchase flow user experience. Several teams created detailed weekly scorecards to track conversion rates by offer calls-to-action (newsletter vs. meter modal, for example) and by each page within the purchase process to identify points of friction in the UX. They then broke down those pain points into relatively-easy-to-fix solutions to make their purchase flows smooth and painless. These focused efforts and many more led to an impressive 29% average increase in monthly sales across the cohort.
