Joshua Foster has been working for Mainstay for nearly 3 years. He says his favorite part about being a DSP is having a purpose and helping to fulfill the lives of the people we support. After asking what his favorite memory is as a DSP, he said, "I think my favorite so far would be going to a Penguins game with some of the people supported or going with the advocates group to meet the Mayor of Pittsburgh." Joshua would like to tell anyone interested in becoming a DSP that it requires patience, kindness, resilience, and fastidiousness. DeVita Baulding has worked at Mainstay for almost a year and a half. She says her favorite part of being a DSP is making a difference in the lives of the people Mainstay supports. Being able to see them and not their disability, assisting them, watching them accomplish their goals, advocating if they’re unable to, and listening to their wants, needs, and concerns can be very fulfilling. Her favorite memory is watching the person she supports practice establishing a healthy relationship with her neighbors. "Seeing the joy and feeling of belonging on her face and having her thank me for believing in her gives both her and I a sense of accomplishment." DeVita says she would tell anyone looking to become a DSP that you must have a deep understanding of people and that you're in their house. Helene has been employed at Mainstay since 2015 and says one of the most rewarding aspects of her role as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) is the opportunity to guide and support the person she works with. She finds great satisfaction in seeing her enjoy new experiences and engage actively with the community. Helene also says it is particularly gratifying to witness the personal growth of the person she supports, as she acquires new skills and overcomes everyday life challenges. One of Helene’s most cherished memories is an overnight trip they took to Deep Creek, Maryland, where she observed how happy the person she supports was when doing a variety of new activities, such as hiking, trying diverse foods, and learning practical skills like folding laundry, baking, and cooking. For those considering a career as a DSP, she would emphasize the profound sense of fulfillment that comes from helping someone navigate and overcome their unique challenges. "The joy of watching the person you support thrive and enjoy themselves is truly incomparable.
