The Versant Power Astronomy Center & Jordan Planetarium have come a long way over the past 70 years. From being a single room on the second floor of Wingate hall to its most recent iteration as a 7,400 square foot facility, it has offered countless programs and services to educate the university community and general public of the cosmic wonders of the universe. The University of Maine’s planetarium opened in 1954, making it the 9th university planetarium in the United States. It served as an educational hub for the university, surrounding K-12 schools, and the local community. In addition to exploring the cosmos, the astronomy center has helped many artists reach for the stars by hosting plays, poem readings and a chorus concert, expanding the boundary of what a planetarium can offer.
