The Maine Technology Institute (MTI) is an industry-led, publicly-funded, nonprofit corporation that offers early-stage capital and commercialization assistance in the form of competitive grants, loans and equity investment for the research, development and application of technologies that create new products, processes and services, generating high-quality jobs across Maine. The Maine Technology Institute was established by the Maine State Legislature in 1999. MTI, working with partners across the state, “shall encourage, promote, stimulate and support research and development activity leading to the commercialization of new products and services in the State's technology-intensive industrial sectors to enhance the competitive position of those sectors and increase the likelihood that one or more of the sectors will support clusters of industrial activity and to create new jobs for Maine people.” MTI is one element of the State's economic development strategy to contribute to the long-term development of a statewide research, development and product deployment infrastructure. See full statute. Every $1 of MTI funds received generates an additional $14 in non-MTI funding. MTI funded companies say that MTI funding has been critical to their commercial success. Since 2000, MTI has funded 1,295 technology projects in Maine, a financial commitment of $106 million that has leveraged over $173 million in additional funding for a total of $280 million.

Founded by Katie Weiler, this startup is developing SeaTwine—a seaweed-based bioplastic aimed at replacing traditional plastic gear in food harvesting. Their goal? To reduce plastics while creating sustainable solutions for aquaculture and farming industries. SeaTwine is set to launch in 2025! ?? Chapped Hide (Cary, ME) was born out of necessity during black fly season! Founder Suzanne Hiltz created a plantain salve to soothe her skin and quickly turned it into a thriving business. With ingredients infused from herbs native to Maine, Chapped Hide is a go-to for dry skin, rashes, and bug bites. Thanks to a series of grants and a lot of hard work, Hiltz is expanding her reach both online and at regional shows. ?? Pen & Cob Farm (Pembroke, ME) is creating new value from an age-old resource—spruce syrup! Katherine Swann and her family moved from New Jersey to Maine and discovered a way to turn the abundant spruce tips on their farm into a delicious and unique product. Launched in November 2022, their spruce syrup is now gaining traction in local and regional markets. ???? Carter’s Kitchen (Ellsworth, ME) is another inspiring story of grit and passion. After working in a café, Hailee Carter channeled her experience and savings into opening her own bakery. Operating six days a week, Carter’s Kitchen has become a local favorite, offering everything from pastries to breakfast burritos. The road hasn’t been easy, but with community support and a "trial by error" mentality, the business is flourishing! #MaineEntrepreneurs are setting a new standard for what it means to do business with purpose.
