The University of Maine School of Law is proud to announce the renaming of its Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic to the Clinics at Maine Law. This change reflects over 50 years of dedicated service to Maine’s most vulnerable communities and the evolving needs of Maine people that our law students serve across the state.

Thank you to Bangor Daily News reporter Erin Rhoda for her thoughtful and in-depth story. It illustrates both the complexities of intimate partner violence and the process of leaving for survivors. It also highlights the multiple service providers that often assist survivors like Marjorie Apsega at every step of their journey towards becoming free from domestic violence. These comprehensive services rely on Victims of Crime Act, or VOCA, funding to continue this critical work in Maine and nationally.

In cases where it can improve one’s ability to meet basic human needs or enforce basic human rights—including access to housing, food, income, safety, education, and healthcare—Pine Tree Legal will offer direct legal advocacy at no cost to help individuals and families navigate these critical issues. We are proud to partner with Pine Tree Legal in their mission to make the justice system more accessible for all Mainers, regardless of income, and to instill greater fairness in society as a step toward reducing poverty.
