Company Close-Up: A sneak peek at one of our Main-Landers! Welcome back to another edition of a glimpse into the life of one of our outstanding operatives. If you haven’t met him yet, you’re in for a treat because he comes as a package deal! 🕵️🧭 Meet Josh and Ruger 🐶🐾 Josh – that’s his name and exploring is part of his game when you’ve been surveying for almost 10 years. Josh is now a Lead Survey Technician who helps train our entry level surveyors. Don’t forget Ruger, he has four legs and he’s only been in the game for a little over 4 years, but he’s already a pro at keeping Josh on track – usually by walking in circles. Large boundary surveys are their favorite type of project – because in the end, you literally circle back to where you started. When the work clock takes a break, Josh and Ruger’s favorite hangout spot is somewhere deep in the woods, away from it all. So, we had to ask—if Josh had to survive in the wild with just one tool, what would it be? His answer? A combination shovel! Not just any shovel, though—this bad boy has an axe-like edge on one side for chopping, and a saw-like edge on the other for cutting. Talk about a multitasking survival essential! If Josh could have lunch with any historical figure, it would be none other than Teddy Roosevelt and his legendary Rough Riders. Picture it: wild stories, high energy, and maybe even a challenge or two to go charge up a hill—just like the good old days! When Josh and Ruger stay close to home, Josh likes to unwind by diving into a little carpentry. If he wasn’t a surveyor, he’d definitely be a master of the saw and hammer. What an amazing blend of savvy – wild, untamed backcountry, hunter, fisher, builder. Main-Land in 3 words according to Josh: Flexible, rewarding, and friendly. The best piece of advice Josh has ever received. "Don’t look back, only look forward." We don’t know about all of you, but Josh and Ruger are definitely going places, and we’re fairly certain that’s an awesome place to be. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Untold Myths & Legends You Won’t Believe: St. Patrick’s Day might be all about green gear, parades, and maybe a pint or two, but the holiday is rooted in a rich history that spans over 1,500 years. The first celebrations began in the 17th century, marking the anniversary of St. Patrick's death in the 5th century. While St. Patrick’s life is shrouded in myth, historians believe he was born in Britain, not Ireland, around the late 4th century. At 16, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders, sold as a slave to a Celtic priest in Northern Ireland, and spent six years herding sheep. After escaping, he eventually returned to Ireland as a Christian missionary. One of the most famous legends says St. Patrick stood on a hillside and banished all the snakes from Ireland, sending them into the sea. But research suggests there were never any snakes in Ireland to begin with—it's surrounded by water, and before that, was too cold for them to thrive. Leprechauns—those mischievous, green-clad figures—are also tied to the holiday. Known in Irish folklore as "lobaircin" (meaning “small-bodied fellow”), these fairy-like creatures were believed to be cranky shoemakers for the other fairies. And the shamrock? It’s been a symbol of Ireland for centuries, first called “seamroy” by the Celts. It was sacred, representing spring’s arrival. Legend says St. Patrick used it to explain the Holy Trinity, and by the 17th century, it became a symbol of Irish nationalism. Company Close-Up: A sneak peek at one of our Main-Landers! 🎉 Meet Emily! 🎉 Say hello to one of our Senior Project Engineers, Emily! With 7 amazing years at Main-Land, she’s been behind some seriously cool projects, including designing large culvert crossings for streams (yep, she's got the engineering magic touch!). Emily earned her Civil Engineering degree at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, and she’s been putting that knowledge to work ever since. When she’s not working her engineering wizardry, you’ll find Emily out on an adventure with her family! She loves jeeping, camping, ice and fly fishing, and kicking back by the fire with her husband and their 2 kids. And when the holidays roll around, Emily and her husband have a tradition of cutting down their very own Charlie Brown Christmas tree on their family’s property—how awesome is that?! 🎄 We asked Emily to sum up Main-Land in 3 words, and here's what she said: Friendly, Passionate, and Diligent. 💪 And as for the best advice she’s ever received? It’s simple but true: Hard work pays off, and good things come to those who work hard! If you enjoyed today’s company close-up, please let us know with a like or a comment. Last night, Main-Land Development Consultants, Inc. presented the Godfrey Forest OSB Mill project in Jay, Maine. The new mill, once fully constructed, will process a million tons of lumber annually from the raw log to Oriented Strand Board. OSB is a type of sheathing, similar to plywood, used in construction. The mill will also produce OSB lumber used in construction framing. The mill’s products will be distributed throughout the northeast. The new mill will be built on the site of the former Pixelle paper mill in Riley, adjacent to the existing main buildings. The new mill is expected to employ up to 150 employees and put another 250 independent loggers, truck drivers, and similar forest product specialists to work. The Jay planning board approved the project as presented by Main-Land. We thank the board and town staff for their hard work to get this important milestone permit. The OSB mill is scheduled to break ground in the spring of 2025 and be up and running in 2026. For more information, visit www.main-landdci.com.
