    About a month ago I found myself sitting in a theatre in #NewYorkCity completely enthralled with a musical performance of Back to the Future. But that wasn’t my prime reason for landing in the Big Apple. I had the privilege of accepting an invitation to speak at MailCon with a panel of experts: Alexander Cartigan, Keith Kouzmanoff, and Barry Abel. We discussed various topics related to #marketing but our primary talking point was how being proactive in applying email best practices is paramount in improving email #deliverability and maximizing revenue. As Marty says, “This is heavy.” Staying up-to-date on best practice is not optional. For an #emailmarketing program to survive, it’s imperative. Key talking points: ?? Creating an email program that not only promotes your products but also educates and delights subscribers is important to drive engagement + create loyalty. Quality content is king! ?? Having a consistent email send frequency at regular volumes improves deliverability and gets you in the inbox. A well planned out quarterly email calendar achieves this + engaging triggered milestone emails. ?? Building specific strategies around the six stages of the subscriber lifecycle makes it easy to put email programs into context + helps plan strategies… (1. Acquisition, 2. Onboarding, 3. Engagement, 4. Super-Engagement, 5. Re-Engagement, 6. Transition) ?? Preference centres that allow subscribers to choose the amount of emails they want to receive in a specific time period will improve subscriber retention by an average of about 28%. ?? And finally, domain reputation is becoming far more important than your IP address because it isn’t as easy to change. I was also able to chat with Ebenezer Anjorin, the product owner of Google Postmaster Tools, and we discussed a little about Gmail sender guidelines. ? He stressed the importance brand safety with the use of authentication, SPF, DKIM and DMARC. ? He recommended always having a double opt-in setup and highlighted the importance of keeping email lists clean of inactive unengaged subscribers. ? He also recommended using separate email addresses for transactional and marketing emails. Using unique addresses for specific types of emails is important to prevent the wrong ones from hitting the spam folder. A huuuuge thank you to MailCon and Kristen Haines for the opportunity to take part in this event and share some excitement about the future of email marketing. Where we’re going we may not need roads, but we might need a uhhh roadmap... for success.

While customer engagement has always been the key driver of email marketing success, recent initiatives by Yahoo and Google, as well as developments like Mail Privacy Protection and the impending death of 3rd party cookies, have driven email marketers to focus even more on improving customer engagement to overcome deliverability challenges and the loss of some visibility into the customer journey.
