?????? ?????? ?????? ?????????????????? ?????????????? ?????????? ???????????????????? ?????? ???????????? ?????? ??????????????????? ?? Context of collision On Monday, March 10th, the oil tanker 'Stena Immaculate,' anchored and awaiting entry to the port of Hull, was struck by the cargo vessel 'Solong.' Our research shows that the 'Solong' had been on a collision course for at least two hours. This incident underscores the critical importance of advanced safety systems in maritime navigation. Our thoughts are with the family of the crew that are still missing. ?? Current safety systems Despite many safety systems already available, it seems none of the available technology was sufficient to prevent this accident. Available technology includes: ? AIS transmitters allow you to see each other on a chart. Both vessels had their AIS transmitters turned on. ? Radars with Automatic RADAR Plotting Aids (ARPA) allow you to see and plot the course of other vessels even when optical visibility is limited. On modern-day radars a vessel the size of the Stena Immaculate should have been clearly visible. ?? So why did it still happen? While we can't make conclusions on this specific case, we have made some observations over the years that could help explain incidents. ? AIS is not 100% reliable, AIS relies on other ships accurately sharing their position. It happens that this location sharing is not accurate or vessels turn their AIS system off. ? Many false alarms, caused by ARPA systems on ships giving false positive detections of objects like shadow reflections of the radar and linear extrapolation of vessel courses which are expected not to move in a straight line. ? Cognitive overload, as too many false alarms become a distraction which triggers the crew to turn off or ignore the safety alarms. ?? What are the solutions? To all officers and shipping companies out there, what do you think is required to enhance safety? #MAHI #maritimeautonomy #COLREGCOMPLIANT

?? Cybersecurity is the backbone of maritime autonomy. ?? As uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) become integral to both commercial and defense operations, the need for robust cybersecurity has never been greater. We're proud our own CTO Bertold Van den Bergh contributes to this critical discussion in the 2025 Janus Review by Janus Marine & Defense. Bertold sheds light on the cybersecurity challenges USVs face—ranging from system breaches to unauthorized control—and introduces MAHI's Zero-Trust cybersecurity framework as a solution. With micro-segmentation and active monitoring, we ensure that maritime autonomy remains secure, reliable, and future-proof. ?? ?? Navigating Cybersecurity in Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs) ?? We are excited to announce that the 2025 Janus Review will contain an article by Bertold Van den Bergh from MAHI on the challenges surrounding the cybersecurity of Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs). As USVs become more prevalent in both military and commercial sectors, the risks of cyber threats—such as system breaches, interference, and unauthorized control—are rising. The article highlights vulnerabilities in current USV systems, detailing the impact of expanding sensor arrays and interconnected components on security. MAHI introduces a more robust "Zero-Trust" cybersecurity framework as a solution, emphasizing micro-segmentation and active monitoring to protect these critical assets from increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks. The full article will be featured in this year's Janus Review, providing an in-depth look at the evolving landscape of cybersecurity in USVs and the steps being taken to mitigate these risks. Stay tuned for the Janus Review going live at this years Navy League of the United States Sea Air and Space Confrene on April 7th! ?? #USV #CyberSecurity #ZeroTrust #JanusReview #Innovation #AutonomousSystems #uncrewedsystems #maritimecybersecurity #UUV #UxS
