Wonderful day in Brooklyn! MAP had the honor of joining Fifth Avenue Committee, elected officials, state and city agencies, residents and many more for the ribbon cutting at Sunset Ridge! The development's 84 affordable senior apartments are spread across a new building and two renovated townhomes next door. 30% of the units are set aside for seniors coming from the city shelters. For the remaining 57 units, available through the city's housing lottery system, more than 42,000 applications were received. The need for quality senior housing is clear and given the emotional remarks from a building resident at today's event, so too is the power and importance of this work. How can design help to prevent loneliness? MAP and Volunteers of America-Greater New York have been exploring this question at two recent buildings - East Clarke Place Senior Residence and the soon-to-open Andrews Avenue Senior Residence. Both affordable senior housing developments have a variety of gathering spaces providing different places to connect and foster community, which helps to reduce the chances of social isolation - a frequent challenge for seniors. In a recent episode of The Urbanist from Monocle, hosted by Andrew Tuck, MAP Principal Fernando Villa, FAIA, NOMA, LEED AP BDC joins VOA-GNY President & CEO Jeffrey Ginsburg to discuss how conscientious architectural design addresses these issues. https://lnkd.in/evRn5PDB #SeniorHousing #LonelinessEpidemic #Architecture #TheUrbanist #Monocle
