Great to see Magnomer represented at Labelexpo Americas 2024. The US Plastics Pact, in their newly updated Unnecessary and Problematic Materials list, now recognizes Magmark SS coatings as a tool for addressing “unnecessary and problematic materials.” The “unnecessary and problematic materials” list is meant to be an evolving document and items may be added or removed from the list over time as technologies change. Whereas the previous version of the list identified PETG as problematic, the newly released version now defers to the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR). If a label construction has APR recognition, meaning that its design is compatible with the North American recycling system, it is not considered part of the unnecessary and problematic materials list. Magnomer’s Magmark SS coatings have APR recognition for use on PETG, and therefore, when PETG is paired with Magmark SS coatings, it is not considered problematic, according to the new wording. Magnets, already present in PET recycling after bottle grind, are designed to pull away ferrous contaminants from the bottle grade PET flake. Like all recycling unit operations, magnets also pull away PET flake. This ‘metal reject’ fraction, which contains 95%+ PET flake by weight, is typically sold by PET reclaimers as a non-bottle grade side stream like fiber or strapping where high levels of non-PET contamination are tolerable.
