I recently had the opportunity to visit DataBank and explore the Zaratan HPC cluster —an incredible setup powering advanced research and large-scale computing. DataBank provides the backbone for high-performance computing, making complex simulations and massive data processing possible. Zaratan, UMD’s HPC cluster, is built for speed, efficiency, and reliability, supporting everything from scientific research to advanced modeling. It was fascinating to see what goes into running a place like this—cooling systems, power management, high-speed networking, and backup systems that keep everything running smoothly. The level of planning and redundancy built into these facilities is impressive. A big thank you to everyone at DataBank who showed us around, as well as Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering, Canitria Cook, and Stephanie for organizing this trip. Last week, I had the opportunity to visit the McLean Data Center of DataBank, as part of a sponsored trip by Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering. One of the key takeaways from this visit was seeing how physical security, network segmentation and disaster recovery strategies work in tandem to ensure uptime and resilience. We explored ZARATAN, the flagship HPC cluster of University of Maryland, with a theoretical peak performance of about 3.5 PFLOPS. I was really inspired by the layers of security designed to mitigate risks in an increasingly complex threat landscape, the level of redundancy and precision in these data centers highlights how every breakthrough in data processing involves meticulous planning and robust infrastructure. We being cybersecurity students started brainstorming the chance we had on the possibilities of unauthorized physical access to judge the physical security of the data center, but it was pretty astounding to note that everything was setup so fine that it won't be possible for any tailgating or other forms of physical tampering. There is a backup for every aspect to prevent any kind of incidents or disasters. Beyond the technical aspects, this visit also highlighted the career pathways within data center security and the evolving challenges professionals face in securing enterprise environments. Seeing these security measures in action gave us a deeper understanding of securing large-scale computing environments - valuable knowledge for our future careers.
