关于我们
WE ARE CHANGING THE WAY THE WORLD TREATS WOMEN. Women are different, right from the beginning. But until 1992, when we were founded, there wasn’t even a research institute dedicated to women’s issues. Today, Magee-Womens Research Institute is solving real world problems and impacting lives—in the fields of cancer, heart disease, fertility, HIV, Alzheimer’s and more. But the potential is boundless. Anything is possible when the country’s largest women’s research institute partners with a world-class women’s hospital.

"If you don’t ask, you won’t get the answer," says Dr. Nicole Donnellan, Magee-Womens investigator and gynecologic surgeon. In a health care system where discomfort and pain have often been overlooked or dismissed, Dr. Donnellan is committed to asking the tough questions, creating space for women to speak up, and ensuring they receive the care they deserve. By focusing on education and open dialogue, she empowers her patients to understand that living with unanswered pain doesn’t have to be the norm. Through her work at the Center for Endometriosis and Chronic Pelvic Pain at UPMC Magee-Womens, Dr. Donnellan is breaking barriers and offering a path forward for those navigating the complexities of pelvic pain.

?? How does vaginal surgery impact anatomy? Selected as the Editor’s Choice in the latest edition of JAMA Surgery, a new #womenshealthresearch study co-authored by Interim Executive Director of Magee-Womens Research Institute, Dr. Pamela Moalli, and investigator, Dr. Shaniel T. Bowen, suggests that postoperative sexual function after vaginal surgery was associated with clitoral size, position, and shape. "This article examines the impact of vaginal surgery on clitoral anatomy and its association with patient-reported sexual outcomes. Despite the critical role of the clitoris in female sexual function, research in this area remains limited. We are pleased to contribute to an emerging body of data that empowers clinicians to provide more comprehensive counseling on the potential sexual implications of vaginal surgery," says Dr. Moalli. Where are they now? ???? Since we last caught up with the Hub for Endometriosis Research, or HER, the team of investigators has secured new funding to continue their projects, including winning 2 out of 3 Women's Pain Research Challenge awards from the University of Pittsburgh Clinical and Translational Science Institute at the 2024 #MageeSummit: ?? A Blood Test for the Non-Invasive Detection of Endometriosis ??: Photo 2: Drs. David Peters & Nicole Donnellan of Magee-Womens Research Institute "These awards will allow us to immediately begin two of the seed projects planned for HER. They also give us a sense of validation since the awards were peer-reviewed and competitive," says Dr. David Vorp, John A. Swanson Professor of Bioengineering, who also serves as Senior Associate Dean for Research & Facilities at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering.
