Want to know the secret to memory retention in learners? ?? ?? Picture this: You’re designing a learning experience but the subject matter is dull, tedious, or otherwise considered boring by learners. What do you do? A common strategy is to try and liven things up with a funny story, interesting fact, or relevant meme. These tangential attempts to capture students’ interest and help them pay attention are what researchers call “seductive details”—and they can often get in the way of learning. Is it time to banish your go-to Garfield comic to your desktop recycling bin? Not so fast. For the Learning & the Brain blog, learning expert Andrew Watson explores a recent study that finds that combining seductive details with the right-sized retrieval practice is the key to improving memory retention in learners. Two kinds of retrieval practice are used in the study. The first is a brain dump, in which learners are asked to write down everything they remember about what they've learned. The second strategy asks learners to answer highly specific questions about the lesson’s main ideas. One week later, the students who did the brain-dump retrieval exercise remembered the seductive detail (goats eating coffee beans and jumping around—we're not kidding!) but retained less of the meaningful content. The students who answered specific retrieval questions remembered the important ideas of the lesson but not the seductive detail. The takeaway: seductive details can help liven up dry subject matter, but they can also distract from what you really want learners to know. “If I have to teach a topic my students find dull, I can indeed include some seductive details (Ha ha! Goats!) to capture their interest,” says Watson. “As long as I conclude that lesson with some highly specific retrieval practice questioning.” Want smart insights like these in your inbox every week?
