What is Founder Mode? This short clip from the Steve Jobs movie captures the essence better than any article ever could. In it, an exasperated Wozniak (played brilliantly by Seth Rogan) confronts Jobs: “What do you even do? You can't write code. You're not an engineer. You're not a designer. You can't put a hammer to a nail... What do you do?” Michael Fassbender's Jobs replies calmly, “I play the orchestra. And you're a good musician. You're the best in your row.” Steve Jobs' Founder Mode at Apple wasn't about stepping back and managing from a distance. It was about conducting the entire orchestra, orchestrating every part of the company with his unique vision and deep involvement. Like conducting, Founder Mode is about holding the grand vision while having enough context to jump in at key moments and steer the company in the right direction.

If you haven't heard of founder mode yet, the term was coined in a recent Paul Graham article. ?In this article, he talks about the two different ways of running large companies, manager mode and founder mode.?The conventional way of running a large company is manager mode: you hire great people and delegate your responsibilities to them.?In this mode, a leader gets their information via their direct reports, and they are more hands-off in day to day operations.?They don't meddle in lower level teams and all of their knowledge is filtered through multiple layers of management. Paul argued that there's a better way to run exceptional companies, and that is founder mode.?As the name implies, this is like how a startup founder operates--they have direct conversations with important stakeholders, no matter what level they are in the organization.?These leaders are deeply embedded into multiple projects and help out by unblocking key initiatives.?They have a thorough understanding of what's going on, and they don't wait for information to filter up through their direct reports.?Paul argues that this is the way that Steve Jobs ran Apple. I started working on an AI agent for engineering leaders because nobody was building the tools I needed. As Outropy expanded, we shifted our mission to empower engineers who aren't AI experts to build sophisticated AI features. The new direction is super exciting, but I really miss using our beta in my day-to-day! Luckily, the folks at Maestro AI are fighting the good fight, and their new product looks pretty awesome.
