?? NEW: Madre Brava has asked the 15 largest European supermarkets whether or not they are going to tackle emissions from their supply chain and whether or not they are going to actively support European consumers to shift towards plant-rich diets to do so. ? The result? ? By the end of this year, all retailers will have climate targets including Scope 3 FLAG (forest, land use, agriculture) verified by the SBTi in place. And while Carrefour confirmed to us that they can't reach their climate targets without a shift from animal to vegetal proteins, Europe's largest retailer Lidl International and Netherlands-headquarted Ahold Delhaize race to lead the global protein transition. ?? Who will be the first to align their protein offerings with human and planetary health diets? ? The race has started - but the finish line is far. ? Thailand’s taxonomy phase 2 is open for public consultation - and that’s important for everyone like us who cares about the sustainability of the country’s food sector. https://lnkd.in/eKChzmBr The Taxonomy classifies economic activities according to their environmental credentials and compatibility with international environmental standards, and could guide business activity, funding and investment. ?? Livestock is included in the taxonomy. Several on-farm mitigation practices are included, for example: manure management, and enteric fermentation. ?? While mitigation efforts are important, a shift to more plants in protein production is crucial for Thailand’s decarbonisation pathway. ?? According to our latest report, even with the best mitigation efforts in the livestock sector, if Thailand’s meat and seafood production continues to grow in the business-as-usual trajectories until 2050, emissions from the food sector will be four times higher than the climate safety threshold according to SBTi’s emission targets. Protein diversification towards more plant-based protein provides the greatest potential for Thailand to both boost its economy and curb its GHG emission. We think it should be one of the mitigation approaches. ???? Throwback to our report with Asia Research & Engagement (ARE), launched last week, on the huge opportunities open to Thailand if it shifts some protein production from animal to plant-based ???? The research found a 50% replacement by 2050 would: ? Add THB 1.3 trillion of economic value to the Thai economy. ?? Add 1.15 million more jobs. ?? Reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 8.45million passenger vehicles from the road (in the US). ?? Save an area of land equivalent to?the province of Nakhon Ratchasima. Exciting opportunities for the country with the merited reputation of the Kitchen of the World. #Thailand #Sustainability #Protein #ProteinTransition #ClimateChange #Food #FoodSystems

?? It won't have escaped your notice that COP29 is underway in Baku. But it seems to have escaped the notice of many leaders of high-polluting countries, who will not attend this year's conference. While this fact, and the potential for disappointing progress, feels disheartening, in our own area of interest we have reason for cautious optimism. Here are three recent positive developments that have kept us fired up. ?? For the first time, draft US dietary guidelines recommend Americans prioritise plant-based proteins over meat, eggs and seafood? https://lnkd.in/eeBNfjs6 ?? Delighted to see our report being mentioned by The Nation Thailand along with a study from University of Oxford that highlights the similar environmental benefits, plus the nutritional advantage, of plant-rich diets. https://lnkd.in/eNzbhGAB Our Thailand Director, Wichayapat P. says: "It is time relevant government agencies and the key corporate players realized how important it is for Thailand to rebalance our protein production system and bring abundant plants back to Thailand’s protein sector." Our report, which was produced in collaboration with Asia Research & Engagement (ARE) and which we released on Monday, found replacing 50% of animal protein production in Thailand with plant-based protein by 2050 would: ? Add THB 1.3 trillion of economic value to the Thai economy. ?? Add 1.15 million more jobs. ?? Reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 8.45million passenger vehicles from the road (in the US). ?? Save an area of land equivalent to the province of Nakhon Ratchasima. ?? ?????????? ???????????? ?????? ???????????????????????? ???????? ?????? ??????????-?????????? ???????????????????????? ???? ???????????? ???????? ???? ??????????????!??? A new study, out today, by ProVeg Deutschland shows that an average plant-based basket in Germany now costs just 16% more than its animal-based counterparts, a huge drop from the 52% price gap we saw in 2022. The massive reduction in just two years suggests we're close to a tipping point for plant-based alternatives - a move from niche to mass market, enabling shoppers to choose freely (at no extra cost) between equal plant and animal products. With this shrinking gap, retailers are supporting consumers in adopting plant-rich diets in a way that’s truly important to them - without breaking the bank. Lidl in Germany is leading the way by being the first to make the healthy choice the easy, more affordable one (at the German discounter plant-based is 3% cheaper than animal-based), and REWE is nipping at their heels with a small premium of 3% for the plant-based basket. This development is not only great news for people's health but also for the health of the planet. As Florian Ludwig Wall, our Senior Associate in Germany, puts it: “Plant-rich diets are the most cost-effective way for German grocers to meet their climate targets - and cutting the price premium is the most important enabling measure retailers can take to support consumers in adopting them.” This is the third price study done by ProVeg, comparing an average basket of plant-sourced vs. animal-sourced products. ?? OUT TODAY: A new report has found?huge?economic and environmental benefits for Thailand if the country moves part of its protein production from animals to plants.??? The report, commissioned by Madre Brava from Asia Research & Engagement (ARE), found that Thailand is uniquely placed to use its status as the Kitchen of the World to become the Kitchen of the Future, reaping the benefits of switching 50% of animal protein production to plant-based by 2050. The move would: ? Add THB 1.3 trillion of economic value to the Thai economy. ?? Add 1.15 million more jobs. ?? Reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 8.45million passenger vehicles from the road (in the US). ?? Save an area of land equivalent to?the province of Nakhon Ratchasima. ?? Competition to deliver healthier, more sustainable food is hotting up in Belgium. ?? ?? Earlier this year Lidl Belgium & Luxemburg set a target for the proportion of the protein it sells coming from plants. ?? It is also offering plant-based proteins at price parity with animal-based products. Increasing the proportion of plants vs animal protein and making sure plant-based pricing is competitive are two incredibly effective ways for supermarkets to reduce emissions and give consumers a healthier choice. Lidl's decision to set a target puts it ahead of the competition. We're excited to see who's next, whether they are willing to go further than Lidl, and whether Lidl will strengthen its target.

EU Policy & Program fellow @ Madre Brava | Accelerating the sustainable food transition as part of the School for Moral Ambition
“What’s the future of protein production?” Just reflecting on last week's energising event on The Future of Protein Production I attended in a sun-drenched city of Amsterdam, representing Madre Brava and the food transition fellowship from The School for Moral Ambition. Here are my key take-aways: ? ?? It was great to witness how players in all segments of the private sector (Unilever, Burger King, Lidl International, Sodexo, … and a bunch of inspiring start-ups) are championing protein diversification, offering less meat and more high quality alternatives for those customers who are clearly asking for healthier and more sustainable options! ? ??Research conducted by multiple players again confirmed the positive effect of eating more plant-based foods on the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer, whilst at the same time often improving people’s weight, blood pressure and lipid profiles. ? ??Unsurprisingly, HEALTH is the n°1 reason for consumers to want to move to more plant-based foods (47%), but when buying meat-like alternatives, TASTE remains the primary trigger (53%). ? Besides ambitious brands leading the way, a favourable regulatory landscape will be essential to support the transition towards healthier and sustainable (low in meat) diets. The sector is calling for standardized and updated dietary guidelines and corresponding food reformulation policies. On top, public investments and a smoother introduction process of promising food innovations will be key. Whilst Ieva Vale?kait?, Minister of Economy and Innovation of Lithuania, showed that some states are already frontrunning on this transition, I wonder if the EU too will be bold enough to take action to improve the health and sustainability of the European food system, whilst at the same time focusing on resource independence and European competitiveness?? ? Let's await the start of the new chapter of our EU Commission in December, and see from there what the story holds.. ?? #ProteinProduction #SustainableFood #PlantBased #FoodTransition #HealthAndWellness #EUPolicy
