Here are some Key Highlights: ?? Female founders are gaining ground: 17.3% of startups now have at least one female co-founder (up from 14.6% in 2023!). ??♀?More women are leading the charge: 11.1% of startups are now led by female CEOs (that's progress from 9.6% in 2023!). ?? Hotspots for diversity: Zambia, Senegal, Rwanda, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ethiopia lead in startups with female co-founders. ??Funding is flowing, but more is needed: While funding to female-led ventures increased initially, it dipped in 2024. We're excited to share the insights from the first large-scale survey on?founder well-being in Africa, a long-overlooked topic. Partnering with Flourish Ventures, Endeavor, Launch Africa Ventures, Econa, and Startup Snapshot, we gathered voices from nearly 200 founders across 13 African countries to explore the intense resilience and challenges required to build businesses on the continent. Founder wellbeing isn’t just a box to check, it’s the foundation of impactful, resilient businesses and about building strong, sustainable support networks. As funders, we’re not only here to invest capital but also to create an ecosystem where founders feel genuinely supported on their journeys. The findings reveal essential areas we’re committed to addressing as partners: ? 81% of founders report that they love what they do, yet 86% feel an impact on their mental and physical wellbeing, citing challenges like stress, burnout, and even depression. ? Many founders rely on exercise, personal relationships, and even a few hours of quality sleep to keep going. But 78% say that being a founder is lonely, and only 14% feel they can truly open up about their challenges. ? Perhaps surprisingly, only 17% of founders feel completely comfortable being open with investors. ?? New Research Alert: We just released the first-ever, large-scale survey on founder wellbeing in Africa. Founder wellbeing is not a widely understood nor discussed topic, but as funders, we believe there is a correlation between founder wellbeing and business success. In collaboration with Endeavor, Launch Africa Ventures, Madica, Econa - Entrepreneur Mental Wellness, and Startup Snapshot, we gathered insights from almost 200 founders across 13 African countries and conducted in-depth interviews to better understand the intense stresses, challenges, and resilience required to build a business on the continent. ? Passionate, but Pressured: 81% of founders report that they love what they do, yet 86% feel an impact on their mental and physical wellbeing, citing challenges like stress, burnout, and even depression. ? Coping in Isolation: Founders report healthy eating, getting enough sleep, and meditation as coping mechanisms. However, only 25% of founders seek professional help from a coach or therapist. 78% say that being a founder is lonely, and only 14% feel they can truly open up about their challenges. ? Investor Dynamics: Only 17% of founders feel completely comfortable having open conversations with their investors. This project builds on Flourish’s dedication to founder wellbeing, and reflects our commitment to addressing the mounting pressures facing today’s entrepreneurs.
