Last week Bioforcetech Corporation's Garrett Benisch presented at Climate Tech '25, an AIA San Francisco gathering at the Center for Architecture + Design, San Francisco focusing on technologies and solutions for tracking, reducing, and rethinking carbon in the built environment. There were so many key takeaways from the presentations! Here are three that really added to the conversation: Carbon accounting right now is mostly retroactive... a firm completes a building and then say 'What did we do wrong?' Until there is a consistent practice of carbon accounting in the early design phase, there can't be a practice of low carbon design! Low carbon materials have a lot of spotlight, including OurCarbon. But we can't lose site of simple, resource efficient design decisions. Lowering floor to ceiling heights, being aware of un-necessary materials... this is all good old fashion sustainable thinking that can have a huge impact on overall LCAs. Set goals you CANNOT reach! And share your failures! The most sustainable companies out there are striving toward goals that are very lofty, but it's pushing them to make big changes and invest in real innovations. This is a safe space for failing, so long as your goals are tough. Garrett presented on a panel focused around circularity of materials, design for deconstruction, and reuse. He presented the Bioforcetech system and its ability to enable the circular city by tranforming waste into a pigment and building material that can be utilized right in the city it is made within. The panel comprised experts in deconstruction and reuse from architecture/engineering titans like Gensler's Marcus Hopper and Arup (Frances Yang), and was moderated by Kathryn Soter of the Good Future Design Alliance (GFDA). This is carbon transformation in action. Pyrolysis, the process that produces OurCarbon, is completed by heating organics to high temperatures in the absense of oxygen. Under these conditions, part of the organic transforms into a gas that we use to maintain the process. The rest is fixed into stable carbon and minerals, resulting in OurCarbon? Production of OurCarbon is well underway at Bioforcetech Corporation's Redwood City, California installation. Each of these cubic yard supersacks hold over 1000 lbs of fixed stable carbon in the form of OurCarbon? ready for use in industry. These bags are already reserved for purchase from our customers to be used in various ways in industry. Stay tuned for more updates on the projects we are collaborating on with this material.

What gets us out of bed in the morning? This. Multiple supersacks of carbon negative OurCarbon waiting shipment to various projects in the Bay Area and beyond. This material will be durably stored in the built environment or put to work replacing fossil derived inputs to inks, coatings, polymers and more. It's a complete 180 from the original path for the input biosolids: landfill.

Our partner Model No. Furniture has installed their 3d printed bio-based, OurCarbon tinted furniture in the newly renovated The Refinery at Domino, a transformed 19th century factory that now houses 460,000 square feet of waterfront office space. The triple height public lobby is adorned with Model No.'s Esker Chairs, Avens Tables, and multiple arrangements of Biobenches as combination seating and planting space. Calling all VERGE '24 attendees! Bioforcetech Corporation's Garrett Benisch will be speaking at Trellis Group's VERGE '24's session "Sustainable Procurement and Embodied Carbon Reduction" on Tuesday, October 29 at 9 am. OurCarbon's ability to lock carbon within structural grade concrete by the hundreds of pounds gives designers, architects, and engineers the ability to reduce the embodied carbon of their buildings without sacrificing performance. Garrett will be diving into the interesting intersection of landfill diversion, wastewater solutions, carbon sequestration, and embodied carbon reduction that Bioforcetech and OurCarbon finds itself at. Garrett will be joined by other speakers including Megan Kalsman of the EPA.

Day 4 of Climate Group’s climate week NYC for Bioforcetech Corporation and OurCarbon was at Newlab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation for their event ‘New Climate Futures. As a hub of innovation and collaboration, Newlab is a hive of energy and is full of new material startup developing to clean up and decarbonize industry. One unique aspect to Newlab is their deep collaboration with New York State and New York City government organizations. Groups like FFAR, NYSERDA, and more work with Newlab to find solutions to the large supply chain and material challenges that New York faces. Bioforcetech has had the honor of working with these groups in exercises modeling out how to valorize organics from manure to agricultural biomass and more. These collaborative exercises can lead to real results thanks to the public private relationship toward innovation that New York and Newlab fosters. We look forward to continuing to work with Newlab and their partners to transform waste to value!

Looking back at day 3 of Climate Group’s Climate Week NYC, we started at Grain Ecosystem’s Biochar Carbon Revolution event, where a panel event featured innovator and close partner John Mead, CEO and founder of Solid Carbon. John’s expertise lead to the first commercial use of Bioforcetech Corporation’s OurCarbon at a winery in Oregon in 2022. Since then, Solid Carbon has poured over 2,000 tons of Concrete with OurCarbon within it! John was joined by Matt Dalkie, Senior Sustainability Manager of Lafarge Canada supporting the investigation of biochars like OurCarbon for use in concrete to inset and decarbonize the material. We’re looking forward to watching Solid Carbon’s success as they continue to scale their innovations!

The third day of Climate Group’s Climate Week NYC became very eventful as The New York Times Climate Forward event went underway. It became even more eventful when climate protest ended it early! Bioforcetech Development Director Garrett Benisch joined a select crowd to hear interviews from an all star group of individuals including Jane Goodall, Muhammad Yunus of the government of Bangladesh, Ali Zaidi of Biden’s climate cabinet, Michael S. Regan of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Jesper Brodin of IKEA, Roy Cooper for North Carolina, Ryan Gellert of Patagonia, weather caster and anchor Al Roker, RJ Scaringe of Rivian, European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra, Guyana President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, and climate scientists Stefan Rahmstorf of University of Potsdam and Michael Oppenheimer of Princeton University. Especially of interest was a heated discussion between Climate Forward Director David Gelles and Kevin Roberts, President of The Heritage Foundation, before the lunch break, where both parties sought to find common footing on the topic of climate change and steps forward. During lunch, Garrett joined a table at an invite only lunch to discuss ethics, policy, and actions around waste that cities like New York can take. The Bioforcetech Corporation technology and the ability for OurCarbon to help form a circular economy around waste proved a hot topic for our table alongside efforts around recycling and tough questions on how to increase awareness and recycling rates from individuals. In the afternoon, the event took a turn when climate protestors took to the stage to stop Vickie Hollub, President and CEO of Occidental, from being interviewed. The protests cause the event to end early, bringing an abrupt stop to the deep conversation that had marked the day. Tonight, Bioforcetech will be witnessing the premiere of a new climate documentary, Legion 44, to cap a truly eventful third day to Climate Week NYC.
