MADE is a partnership between RISD and Brown that fosters innovation at the intersection of design and engineering
关于我们
A partnership between Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, the Master of Arts in Design Engineering (MADE) is an intensive joint degree program that fosters innovation at the intersection of design and engineering. Iteration with Intention: In this 11-month, residential program, MADE degree candidates exercise creativity, analytical reasoning, and research skills to produce work that responds to small- and large-scale challenges. Students develop effective solutions through iterative making and testing to express ideas through the objects they create. Working in studios and workshops, including a well-equipped, 10,000 square-foot maker space for prototyping, students envision alternative frameworks that address global issues. By iterating with intention, MADE participants create and refine work according to real-world needs, towards an ultimate goal of improving lives. Collaboration is Key: Collaborative projects are central to MADE, as students form strong connections with a close-knit cohort of designers and engineers. Opportunities for project-based work with program partners and industry experts expands connections and gives ample opportunity to interact with the world on the cutting edge. The program also offers opportunities to collaborate with faculty mentors whose diverse expertise supports students in understanding and synthesizing the different perspectives and contexts they will encounter in practice. A Unique Partnership: MADE students benefit from the complementary strengths of Brown & RISD, neighboring world-class institutions on Providence's East Side. Close academic ties make it easy for students to broaden their knowledge through access to each campus’ exemplary resources. The wide variety of elective courses offered by the two institutions in tandem with MADE’s highly collaborative and interdisciplinary structure allows for students to define their own pathways through the program.

Treeborg (Sebastian Calvo '24) merges technology and biology, blurring lines between grown and built environments. Attached to trees, it collects data on health, soil, and surroundings, processed in the cloud. A custom AI gives the tree a voice, providing humans with care instructions. This project was featured at the MIT Museum's "After Dark: Grow" event and won the 2024 Outstanding Capstone Project Award by Brown School of Engineering. It's not every day that students get to exhibit their work in the museum! We're looking forward to celebrating our students' hard work this week and thanking our many wonderful partners who made this opportunity possible.
I'm excited for our 'Data Landscapes: Visualizing the Urban Experience' exhibit to kick off this week at the Museum of Science in partnership with Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and the Edgelands Institute. Visitors will be able to explore how local vibrancy generates data – from the movements of our neighbors to the ecological changes shaping our landscape. This collaboration began in my winter term course at Brown University School of Engineering and Rhode Island School of Design, and proceeded this spring as a joint research sprint fellowship with BKC and Edgelands with a diverse cohort of students from MADE Program at Brown + RISD and Harvard University. MADE’s contribution to this project, and with these partners, created an ambitious opportunity for students to learn about data-driven design and artificial intelligence tools at an urban scale, and to imagine how these tools might serve a broader set of values in the future. We challenged students to design more delightful ways to experience the city, while guiding them through the many practical and ethical challenges of using real city data to inform decisions. My hope is that this work will inspire future collaborations that combine creative and technology interests! Students immersed themselves in a wealth of data provided by the City of Boston with the mission of uncovering novel, meaningful, and joyful perspectives on navigating and understanding the urban environment. Their interactive exhibits invite intellectual and sensory exploration of urban life, and range from envisioning the evolving contours of the coastline to revealing the secret lives of the city’s trees. "The Museum of Science is spending the entirety of 2024 shining a light on the climate solutions that are transforming the ways we live, move, eat, and work and the innovators who are making these transformations happen," said David Sittenfeld, director of the Museum's Center for the Environment. "The work of these students shines a light on the beauty and fragility of our urban environments and underscores the importance of leveraging data visualization to promote a more sustainable and equitable future for all of us.” “Many luminaries, both local partners and international experts, generously shared their insights with the students in this Research Sprint. Together, we demonstrated the transformative potential of inter-institutional collaboration in addressing contemporary challenges," said Elisabeth Sylvan, Senior Director of Strategy and Programming at the Berkman Klein Center. The installation begins on April 17th, is free to all museum visitors with a general admission ticket from 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.: https://lnkd.in/eY7PrsGK Brown University Brown University School of Professional Studies #designengineering?#datavisualization?#AI #engineeringeducation #sustainabledesign

Congrats to two MADE Program at Brown + RISD students, who recently collaborated with a Rhode Island School of Design student to earn 1st place in the community design-themed RISD x IDSA Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) Make-a-thon! This day-long event was hosted by E-ship and IDSA at RISD and was designed to enhance connections between students and alumni while promoting a culture of innovation and problem-solving. This year the competition topic was about community design, a topic dear to our hearts in MADE! Students shifandi sun and Pengye Yang with their teammate Jack Martinez from RISD submitted a project for cultivating a tighter-knit student community across Brown University and RISD: their gamified Bridge Bites Food Truck requires two people from each community (RISD & Brown) to swipe their student ID cards at the same time to reveal a menu and?then walk together?to collect and share their meal. Well done, team! #designengineering Brown University School of Engineering

During MADE’s Winter Studio, Prof Beth Altringer led a collaboration with the Harvard Berkman Klein Center. During this trip, she and MADE Maker-in-Residence Griffin van Horne brought students to visit leading design and engineering companies in the Boston innovation ecosystem. Many MADE students are interested in cutting edge technology and entrepreneurship. The program took them to tour Autodesk’s Technology Center, a unique customer research facility where Autodesk provides space and resources for cutting-edge companies like the Aurelia Institute to grow, while learning about the needs of customers who are pushing the limits of what’s possible.
