There’s something you need to know about your audience. Just like you, they don’t want to be sold to as “consumers” — They want to be understood and they want to be inspired. Just a decade or two ago, you could simply pay for air time and people would rush out to buy whatever you were selling. Since then, it’s gotten very noisy out there with everyone yelling about why you need to buy their new thing. It’s estimated that we’re advertised to up to 5,000 times per day. With all that noise, people have trained themselves to tune out traditional advertising. They’re ignoring banner ads and they’re skipping commercials. So, how do you get through to people? The answer — You have to play a different game. We exist to help brands reach their audience by helping you fight through the noise. We don’t do it by creating more ad pollution that will just be ignored, we do it by creating content your audience WANTS to watch.

    New episode of Building Made By Things! (2021) With a bunch of projects going on to start the year, I was AGAIN being spread too thin. After coming up with a list of my tasks, I developed what I called, “Operation Dream Team”.?Made up of roles I'd need to hire to get my sanity back.?So in addition to the staff animator I already had, I added 4 more people: 1. A Producer/Project Manager 2. Another Animator 3. A 3D Modeling Intern 4. An Art Director Immediately, this redesigned team was firing on all cylinders and we were creating some of the best work we’ve EVER made. For the first time in 7 years, I felt like I was doing what I set out to do. Sure, I wanted to make some money, and we did that pretty well in 2021, doubling what we made in 2020. But the REAL feeling of success came from having a great team around me that could push each other and myself to create something special. This was no longer about surviving for me, this was now about finding ways to thrive as a creative team. We just needed an opportunity to prove what we were capable of.     Going into 2019, I still wasn’t feeling like myself, but the business was telling me it was time to make my first hire. I figured out payroll and benefits, then got an office and FINALLY hired my first employee. Shout out to Colin van ‘t Veld ;) Naturally ?? things slowed down a bunch. Instead of freaking out, I decided that we'd create a short film based on my family's experience with losing a child. A story I NEEDED to tell and one that gave me back my love for animation. When we premiered it, we won a few awards that meant a lot to me personally... But did nothing for the business. It was looking like the whole "employee experiment", might be about to end... Until Greg Walter from 2Tall Animation gave us a call to team up on a cool project for the NBA! We were saved! ...Until I had a debilitating panic attack that made me afraid to leave my house for about a month. After building some new routines, I was able to get back on my feet though. 5 extremely difficult years in, 3 years in a row of growth. The only thing that could slow our momentum down now was a true act of God… like a worldwide pandemic or something… Tune in next week for year 6 of Building Made By Things. #content #marketing #video #animation #business #doc

    2018 was my 4th year in business and probably the most difficult of my entire life. In addition to Made By Things and teaching, I started juggling Making Midwest AND The Game of Creativity, but in April of that year, my whole world fell apart. My daughter Madeleine was born prematurely, and our time with her was too short. Afterward, I struggled to find any meaning in anything. Especially my business or any of my other side projects. By the end of the year, MXT was actually doing great. The things I once dreamed about were coming true, but I didn’t care. It was all meaningless. As a single-income family, though, I had to keep pushing into 2019 to hopefully find some meaning to all this work. One of the most inspiring parts of this project was how our art director and illustrator thoughtfully explored color harmonies while designing frames, seamlessly blending brand hues to create stunning, one-of-a-kind compositions.
