“Of 400 farms in our county, only five are organic,” says Matt Fitzgerald of?Fitzgerald Organics?in Hutchinson, Minnesota. His 2,500-acre family farm is patchwork across 40 miles of land the family owns and leases, and grows organic corn, soy, wheat and specialty crops such as beans and peas.

The Fund has already closed on and is actively deploying commitments from Builders Vision, The Rockefeller Foundation, the Schmidt Family Office (SFO) Foundation, Zellis Family Foundation, Zarpet Family Foundation, Matthew Zell Family Foundation, Lacebark Investments, and nine other investors. ? Mad Capital has deployed over $25 million to 30 farmers, which has helped transition over 10,500 acres of land to organic and grow their total portfolio acres by 26% per year, up to 79,115 acres. ? We couldn't have kicked off the next leg of Mad Capital's journey without the backing of The Rockefeller Foundation, Builders Vision, The Schmidt Family Foundation, Lacebark Investments, and many others. Mad Agriculture sent a thoughtful holiday box to us Casad Family Farms as patrons of the Perennial Fund and it has inspired our own development of such a gift for our meat box subscribers. I had never heard of Meadowlark Community Mill and now I am a super fan. We started growing grains at larger scale in the past few years as adaptation to the great disappearing act of irrigation waters in the West. I have totally new reverence for grains, grain production as a part of regenerative holistic models in arid contexts. The grain guide from Meadowlark is beautifully done and I learned a lot about the nutritional and culinary benefits of treating grain like a fresh produce, and processes of stone milling and keeping the bran, germ and endosperm together in a final product, which makes shelf life shorter but yields more nutritious and more flavorful flours. Most flour bought at the store undergoes a roller milling (higher temp) and seperates the flour for long shelf life. Finding inspiration in the thoughtfulness of my peers, slowing down and letting the heart of agriculture, its people and its stories refuel my tank for the year ahead.
