关于我们

In October 1968, Gene Mackey—with a passion for architecture and a will to succeed—took a risk. He opened a one-man office on the 20th floor of the Railway Exchange Building in downtown St. Louis with 800 square feet and a view of the Mississippi River. His risk paid off; more than 50 years later Mackey Mitchell has thriving offices in St. Louis; Asheville, North Carolina; Lawrence, Kansas; and Dallas, Texas. Mackey’s influence and guidance developed the firm into a group of thought leaders driven by a philosophy of life-long learning and dedication to the power of human potential. Mackey Mitchell is now a proven expert in planning, design, construction, and renovation for higher education—including residential, social, dining, and academic facilities—as well as K-12 and special needs education, workplace, and civic + cultural facilities. Having designed buildings for more than 85 higher education clients, we understand the anatomy of a successful campus and what attracts students to it. Our broad range of student life experience gives us uncommon insight into how each generation chooses to engage with their university spaces.

  • Last week, Amanda Jo S., had the pleasure of joining students from South Technical High School for Java Jam, an informal networking event designed to help students practice professional networking, build confidence, and explore career paths. Over coffee, cocoa, and bagels, Amanda connected with students from the Design + Entrepreneurship and Graphic Design programs, learning about their creative interests, career goals, and the projects they’re passionate about. The morning wrapped up with a fun, hands-on activity where students teamed up with professionals to create and pitch creative ads for everyday classroom objects — blending quick thinking, teamwork, and creativity. Events like Java Jam are such a valuable way to support and encourage the next generation of designers and creators, and we’re always grateful for the opportunity to be part of it.

  • This week, Mackey Mitchell was proud to take part in the 2025 Building Museums Symposium, hosted right here in St. Louis. As part of the event, Jennifer Plocher Wilkins helped guide a tour of Soldiers Memorial Military Museum and Court of Honor yesterday, sharing insights into the museum’s rich history and the extensive renovation led by Mackey Mitchell. Our team worked closely with project partners to thoughtfully restore and modernize this iconic landmark — preserving its historic significance while transforming it into a vibrant, welcoming space for future generations. Hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums, the symposium brings together experts in museum planning, construction, and design to explore how architecture can enhance the visitor experience and create lasting cultural impact. With the symposium completely sold out, it was inspiring to see so much interest and enthusiasm around the future of museum spaces — and we were honored to showcase one of our most meaningful projects as part of the conversation.
