How do you deal with a boss who is (literally) not human? We spoke to Wharton Prof. Lindsey Cameron about her fascinating research into how ride-hail drivers interact with the tools that make app-based work possible. On Friday, we held our Fall Conference, ????-???????????? ???????????????????? ????????????????????, here on our Philadelphia campus. Bringing together Wharton experts on ecosystem theory with representatives from various sectors and industries, this conference explored how firms can harness the value of artificial intelligence through synergy and partnerships. While our conferences are always highly interactive, this one was particularly so. Half of the day was dedicated to small group discussions by industry, where participants engaged deeply with the unique challenges and opportunities of their specific sectors. A huge thank you to our attendees for diving in so enthusiastically! We will release a report with insights from the day in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we want to extend our gratitude to our speakers, group moderators, and everyone who attended. Check out some photos from the day below! John Paul MacDuffie Patrick Combes Juston F. A new AI tool from Computational Social Science Lab at Penn measures media bias.
Concerns about news coverage around events like an election often focus on false information. But what about news that is factually accurate, yet biased? Enter the Media Bias Detector, the latest product of The Wharton School professor Duncan Watts' years of research into media coverage and consumption, created to address one of Watts' key findings: that biased news can be more dangerous than "fake news." The free tool tracks and analyzes articles from top publishers in close to real time, providing, in Watts' words, "regular people with a powerful, useful resource to better understand how major events, like this election, are being reported on." The popularization of OpenAI's ChatGPT provided a breakthrough moment for the CSSLab at Penn – a joint venture between Wharton, Penn Engineering and the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania – to develop and launch the Detector, as the lab's researchers designed it around OpenAI's GPT infrastructure. Great summary of Mack's recent visit to Infosys, where Executive Director Valery Yakubovich shared Wharton research on Generative AI with coporate leaders.

“Corporates should try out generative AI, explore, experiment with it, and not rush the adoption journey. The focus should be on improving productivity, not cost reduction,” says Prof. Valery Yakubovich, executive director at the Mack Institute for Innovation Management for Innovation Management, The Wharton School. Read my fascinating interaction with him on how generative AI helps innovation here: https://infy.com/4fr5Tk6 When ChatGPT burst into fame in November 2022, companies were worried: will jobs vanish, will we miss the bus, what should we do about it? Unfortunately, there has been a knee-jerk reaction from corporates who rush to capture value before it is created. The investment in this technology is staggering. But there are not many proven, successful business models yet for returns from generative AI. It is hard to account for all cost elements that go into adopting it. It is important to define the economic value from AI investments, how to unlock it first and capture second. Thanks to Prof. Valery for taking his precious time to share these valuable insights from his body of research. #generativeAI #genAI #AI #innovation #ChatGPT | Infosys Knowledge Institute |Infosys InStep | Kisha Gupta, Praveen Dwivedi, Roshni Satish, Ankith Menon, Joseph Nebistinsky, Emma Needleman

Mack Executive Director Valery Yakubovich in Hong Kong
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending a class taught by alumni, for alumni. It's incredible to see how The Wharton School community in Hong Kong is tackling the challenges of AI—by supporting each other in understanding and using it! And they're doing it together with the alumni of INSEAD, our long-term partner. Sharing the Mack Institute for Innovation Management's work in this space afterward felt so natural and rewarding. Thank you, Sanjay Khanduri and Kevin Pereira for the invitation and hospitality.
