    Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication

    looking forward to speaking and participating in the panel discussion at the PM-HIP workshop at ORNL this week as a metallurgist, I'm a huge fan of powder metallurgy given that you can really push the limits of performance in large-scale, critical components (corrosion, high temp capability, strength, you name it ... just look at modern jet engines) as co-founder at Machina Labs, I'm excited that our tech can address some of the challenges associated with manufacturing of PM-HIP components and ensure, in particular, a more secure supply chain https://pmhip.ornl.gov/

    The robot-to-employee ratio in US manufacturing is 1:35, in China 1:26, and in South Korea 1:10; best in the world. At Machina, we’ve reached 1:2, or 1:0.5 when looking at just manufacturing roles. This is only achievable with new tech dev. If scaled across all manufacturing, it would provide an unbeatable national advantage over rivals.

    Sometimes, you can create a finish that mimics a different material, and it turns out incredible. We did a metal piece for a secret car project that has a wood grain embossed finish on metal, and it came out looking amazing. You can open up new design vectors with a new tech.

    Why robots? Flexibility. With two robots, we shape intermediate geometries, then we take it up a notch: forming, for example, a dome with zero draft angle, using method similar to spin forming but with one robot and no die. And what do we call it? You guessed it… Robospinning!

    We work hard, but we also know how to celebrate! ?? Last week, we threw a party to celebrate with the people who make our long hours at work possible: our families. Their support behind the scenes lets us push limits, work those late nights, and build the future of tech. We showcased some of our latest creations, from the latest version of our robotic cell to a lunar lander tank we made for NASA, and even gave a sneak peek at a top-secret automotive project. ???? Without the support of those closest to us, none of this would be possible.     The longer I do this, the clearer it gets: as a founder, your biggest decision is who you hire. You need a smart team that pushes you, gets things done, and is a blast to work with. Somehow, I got all three. We just had our second company party, which; coincidentally; was on my birthday. I wore the shop shirt the team gave me last bday, with a skull on the back (I’m a bit obsessed with skulls; some are even tatted on me). For me, it’s a reminder that ego is the enemy, one of our core values. This year, they made me a portrait out of metal using our tech; and had to develop new tech just to nail my beard! I’m constantly inspired by this team. Get yourself a team like that, and your life will change for the better.
