Earlier this year I received two calls regarding significant write downs on projects (that I was not involved in). Specifically, they wanted help in how to avoid this in the future. Coincidentally, or perhaps not: ? Both are established firms in the engineering / design / construction / EPC space ? Both involved using a risk scoring tool with internal team members; i.e. following their process ? Both projects involved an established technology (not emerging or FOAK/first-of-a-kind) So we picked it apart: ? Internal only risk review process involved too many and too established employees ? Lots of groupthink - while people were told that anyone could stop a pursuit based on risk, a large review team with heavyweights in the room meant that the people doing the work were just nodding and going along for the ride ? Divergent incentives for team members - the sales folks had an incentive to say yes (commission), the 'risk team' had an incentive to say no (no project, no risk!), and the execution team (project management, engineering, etc.) was swayed based on how busy they were ? It was well-known how the scoring output reacted to inputs, so the team adjusted their inputs to meet the desired output ? The pervasive attitude was, can't get fired following the established processes (i.e., don't rock the boat) ? Negative bias towards FOAK technologies, and positive bias towards established technologies Eerily - or perhaps not - despite different companies and projects in different industries, the stories were similar. ? We put together a program to look for the 'right' things and give the executive team early warning signs in the future, so they could proactively avoid overruns and keep their bottom line, and their clients, positive. Lots of great insights in David Ziskind, PE, PMP's article about building a first-of-a-kind process! This quote really stuck out: "In particular, the design basis can serve as the foundation, laying the groundwork for decisions and project approach, and should be regularly reviewed and updated or any changes."

The world is changing quickly, and we need to be ready to adapt and innovate more efficiently and effectively. In my column in the the latest issue of Protein Production Technology International, I talk about de-risking FOAK. Your first-of-a-kind or emerging technology CAN move to commercial manufacturing scale successfully, with reduced risk - but it depends on careful planning. Read more in my article here: https://lnkd.in/eUaqfEpg While I am bummed to miss Future Food-Tech San Francisco next week (balancing 4 youth baseball schedules has become challenging!), I will be at PACK EXPO Southeast (in Atlanta) on Monday, and also welcome the opportunity to connect on a call (https://lnkd.in/e2x7d-sD). #future #innovation #manufacturing #projectmanagement #sustainability

David Ziskind, PE, PMP on “strategies to de-risk first-of-a-kind (FOAK) manufacturing projects in alternative proteins.” #manufacturing #projectmanagement #future
?? Coming soon... tomorrow with a bit of luck! This latest +140-page edition of Protein Production Technology International is currently chugging away uploading as you read this. And boy do we have some superb features lined up, with new writers (some familiar names!) delving into plant molecular farming, functionality and fortification in alt proteins, regulations, intellectual property, biomass fermentation, coverage of the MISTA Growth Hack from last November, and much, much more! I've counted and we have a grand total of 66 exclusive interviews in this first issue of 2025, plus our usual fantastic columnists (Anna Handschuh, Hannah Lester, Andrew D Ive, David Ziskind, PE, PMP, Gemma Tadman, Laine Clark and Jennifer Bailey) covering investment, go-to market, IP, regulations, manufacturing, marketing and retail, and policy. And I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff Tripician from Meatable! If you want to read this latest edition, please subscribe free of charge to be among the first to dive in via the news story below. And if you know anyone interested in #alternativeproteins, please do me a favor and forward them the link... Thanks to PoLoPo, Kyomei, Alpine Bio, Moolec Science, Mozza Foods, Bright Biotech, Plantopia Bio., Finally Foods, for taking part in our PMF feature. A big shout out to all the MISTA cohort companies for telling us how the Growth Hack went for them, including Nutrition from Water? (NXW), Solmeyea, Ingrediome Inc., revyve, California Cultured Inc., EQUII, Arborea, Sempera Organics Inc., Calysta, The Better Meat Co., The Protein Brewery, MOA foodtech, Superbrewed Food Inc., and Solar Foods. Our annual regs feature also turned out very nicely and we were pleased to speak with Mosa Meat, BLUU Seafood, GOURMEY, Forward Food Law, Vireo Advisors, LLC, Daniele Leonarduzzi, and Unibio. In the spirit of the Oscars, too many people to thank... But there's no rest for the wicked. All eyes turn to our Q2 edition, out 4 June 2025. #foodtech #fermentation #cultivatedmeat #plantbased #futureoffood

Just finished an article 'De-risking FOAK' which will appear first exclusively in Protein Production Technology International next week. Yes, you can scale up manufacturing with a first-of-a-kind/emerging process or technology, but intentional, deliberate planning is a must in order to control risk (translation: avoid cost and schedule overruns!) #manufacturing #riskmanagement #planning

"How do we not make mistakes?" The past few weeks have seen an exciting uptick in manufacturing interest, as companies adapt to a new administration and potential opportunities and challenges. A common theme I have seen in discussions and requests has ultimately been about risk reduction. My favorite part of my job, and the reason I started Mach Global Advisors, is to address gaps in planning and risk mitigation. Robust project planning will help in the development of your project and support you in making strategic decisions for your company - some of which could be existential. My goal this year is to start sharing anonymized case studies and examples, to help you see potential issues and ensure your project doesn't blow up. (Hopefully not literally, but in terms of cost and schedule overruns, and commercial and technical risk). Comment below or message me if there's a topic you'd like to see addressed! Will contractors scramble for labor this year? It depends. Firms that build multi-year megaprojects may have more success finding construction workers, experts say. ?? "No matter what type of projects they work on, there are steps that contractors can take to ensure that they are the employer of choice in their markets. Upskilling workers and giving them the tools to fill in-demand positions is vital." #construction #workforce #projects
