Here’s a brief history of Mac Mannes ?? Originally founded in 1939 as a homewares and gift store, we’ve changed a lot over the years, but our commitment to our clients has remained the same! The following was written by John Mannes, Mac Mannes’ son who eventually ran the business himself, about the company’s shift into the merch game: In 1958 one of my friends worked for his father-in-law in NYC making vending machines which dispensed coffee with cream, without or with sugar. ?This was a very innovative product and they sold nationally. ?He showed me a knife with a recessed blade that he was going to buy and distribute at a trade show. ?I recognized the manufacturer as one with whom we did business. ?He wanted to know if we could supply 2,500 pieces. ?I had never seen an imprinted specialty item before and had no clue as to how you imprinted the plastic ands what artwork was necessary. ?He told me that was not a ?problem and I should see at what price we could supply them. ?I called the factory and was given a cost. ?I marked it up 1/3 and he told me that I had the order. ?This was the biggest sale we ever had. ?Our average sale was less than $5.00 and this order came to be close to $2000.00. ?WOW! ?How long had this been going on, I wondered. I was now in the specialty advertising business and set out to learn what it was all about. ?Basically, it was a pen and calendar business and there were only about four others in this business in the city. ?I wasn’t into calendars at all but the other items were of great interest, leather wallets, desk accessories and the like. ?It was slow but I did develop some orders and joined the National Association, went to my first trade show and watched this business grow. #promotionalproducts #merch #marketing #macmannes85

We dug up some old ads from the early years of Mac Mannes! These were from when we sold homewares and gifts on G Street in DC. John Mannes, Mac Mannes’ son, wrote of the early years: Mac Mannes was opened on Friday the 13th in 1939. ?My father always considered that to be a lucky day. ?The store carried gifts and housewares and was fashioned after the famous Hammacher Schlemer store in New York. ?Of course the 2nd World War started soon after the opening although our country did not enter the hostilities until December 1941. ?These were pretty tough years with all kinds of shortages, but the store grew in popularity and in 1946 my father moved down the street (from 1332 G Street to a store triple the size at 1312 G Street.) ?This was quite an undertaking. ?Aside from the larger space and greater rent, it represented one of the most modern retail spaces in the city. ?A branch store was opened in Langley Park, Maryland in the mid 1950’s. ?This was never very successful ands was closed in the early 1960’s. #promotionalproducts #merch #marketing #macmannes85
