Our Baseline Testing Coordinator Joseph Collins has been a busy guy lately! Thank you to St. Elizabeth School and Holly Cross School for great turnouts. It was each school's first time using Sway Medical Balance System for fast, objective and fun concussion baseline testing. A statement on youth football and concussions from our medical director, Vincent Schaller, MD, DABFM, CIC. #concussions #collegefootball #concussionrecovery #tbi #braininjuries #youthfootball #postconcussionsyndrome #GraysonMcCall #NCState #JackTuttle #uofmichigan
With recent news of the decisions of college quarterbacks Grayson McCall of NC State and Jack Tuttle of University of Michigan to retire after suffering from multiple concussions, talk has turned once again to traumatic brain injury in youth football. We believe that starting contact/tackle football at a later age and treating every concussion to full recovery, every time, will help us see less long term post-concussion issues. These symptoms and conditions can include migraines, cognitive deficits, visual deficits, etc. We have to protect these kids, because a developing brain is more vulnerable to injury and long term consequences. We need to make brain health a priority in sports.

Researchers at the Concussion Legacy Foundation and Mass General Brigham published new findings that recognize a new sign that a concussion has occured. Simultaneous Headshake After A Kinematic Event (SHAAKE) refers to the motion of quickly shaking the head back and forth, as if to "snap out of it." Looking for SHAAKEs could help identify up to 33% of undiagnosed concussions when the injury occurs. https://lnkd.in/etY_-B-J #concussions #tbi #braininjuries #concussiondiagnosis #SHAAKE Christopher Nowinski, PhD Daniel Daneshvar, M.D., Ph.D.

Yesterday, University of Michigan Quarterback Jack Tuttle announced his decision to retire from football after suffering a staggering five concussions. We applaud his courage. People with several concussions have a higher risk of experiencing long term TBI issues, including migraines, cognitive deficits, visual deficits and anxiety/depression. His announcement helps shine a light on the seriousness of repeat concussions in football, and we wish him the best in his future pursuits.
University of Michigan Quarterback Jack Tuttle showed a lot of courage in making the decision to retire from football after suffering a staggering five concussions. A fifth concussion is no joke. People with several concussions have a high risk of experiencing long term post-injury traumatic brain injury (TBI) issues. These issues can include migraines, cognitive deficits, visual deficits and anxiety/depression. Tuttle probably has good physicians advising him. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors. #concussions #jacktuttle #michiganwolverines #TBI
