Hybrid electric Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee “park outside” recall for fire risk Among the millions of electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles now on the nation’s roadways, high voltage battery fires are still relatively rare. Nevertheless, the fire service knows how dangerous, destructive, and resource-intensive these fires can be when they do happen. The following safety information is important for situational awareness and should be shared widely. Chrysler issued a recall on Sept. 27 (NHTSA recall numbers 24V-720 and 24E-080) for more than 154,000 Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) due to a risk of fire. The high voltage battery may fail internally and lead to a vehicle fire while parked or driving. The recall affects the following models: 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler PHEVs (118,230 potentially impacted units). 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee PHEVs (36,802 potentially impacted units).
NTSB releases illustrated digest of investigation into East Palestine derailment On Sept. 24, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released an illustrated digest of its investigation into the 2023 derailment of a Norfolk Southern Railway freight train carrying hazardous materials in East Palestine, Ohio. The illustrated digest serves as a companion to the NTSB’s 201-page final report, which was presented during a public hearing on June 25, 2024, and released shortly after the hearing. The illustrated digest uses photos and graphics to illustrate how and why the derailment occurred as well as explaining NTSB safety recommendations to prevent similar accidents in the future. While the final report remains the NTSB’s definitive publication on the derailment, the digest highlights the depth and scope of the 16-month investigation. NTSB has posted all investigation information to date on its Investigation Page, Norfolk Southern Railway Derailment and Hazardous Materials Release. Each safety recommendation from NTSB’s completed investigation is now linked on this page, along with the illustrated digest (Report SPC-24-06) and final report (Report RIR-24-05).
