Meet LIFT cohort member Stefania Tocci, a postdoctoral researcher at University of Massachusetts Lowell. Stefania is a postdoctoral fellow in the Das Lab right here at UMass Lowell, where she focuses on understanding the role of host-microbe interactions in inflammation linked to chronic diseases. With a strong foundation in cellular and molecular biology, Stefania's research expertise extends to advanced imaging and gene editing techniques, allowing her to model diseases more effectively. Since earning her PhD, Stefania has expanded her research to include the use of primary cells and patient-derived organoids, a promising approach for studying chronic diseases and identifying potential therapeutic targets. Meet LIFT Cohort Member Emre Bektik, a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital. With a diverse and accomplished academic background, Emre has devoted his career to understanding and improving cardiovascular health. During his studies, Emre conducted significant research into myocardial infarction, heart regeneration, and cardiac arrhythmias, leading to several first-author publications that advanced knowledge in these critical areas. Now, as a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Emre focuses on diabetes-related atherosclerosis, specifically investigating how the non-coding genome— such as long non-coding RNAs (IncRNAs)— influences the development of atherosclerotic lesions in diabetic mouse models. This pioneering work aims to reveal novel insights into cardiovascular disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic approaches. Meet LIFT Cohort Member, Kyrie Wilson, PhD Candidate at Medical University of South Carolina Kyrie is a 5th-year PhD candidate whose research is focused on understanding the impact of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage in age-related diseases. Her work is driven by a passion for translating scientific discoveries into clinically relevant therapies that can treat or even reverse this damage, aiming to improve human health. As part of a dynamic research team, Kyrie has contributed to a project that was awarded a prestigious Blue Sky Award for its innovative approach to mtDNA repair. Kyrie's work also includes assisting in the filing of a patent for the technology and submitting a first-author manuscript, which is currently in revision. Katrina Rodheim, PhD Candidate at University of Massachusetts Amherst Katrina's journey into sleep research began as a post-bacc researcher, where she first explored the connections between sleep and memory. Building on this foundation, Katrina pursued a master's degree, refining their skills in conducting highly controlled circadian protocols to study the intricate relationship between sleep, circadian rhythms, and overall health. Combining her expertise in sleep research with a personal passion for women's health and emotional well-being, Katrina is now focused on investigating how sleep and ovarian hormones interact to influence emotional memory in aging. Her work aims to uncover important insights into how hormonal changes during aging may impact emotional health and cognitive function in women.
