Dr. Habibi, a music neuroscientist at USC, shares how music training increases elements of executive function. The subjects had increased executive control, impulse control, planning skills and attention allocation. Music also helps with ‘speech in noise’ perception and could help those with hearing issues to hear in noisy environments. It’s fun to stay at the ... YMCA!!!! Rather, it’s fun to teach there. Bringing the concept of brain capital and brain health to these YMCA leaders and staff was revitalizing. Showing them how brain health connects to creative thinking and intercultural relationships is a leadership skill that will serve them well in camp and in life. We trained the entire staff on stress reduction, resilience, emotional intelligence and regulation for brain health and did a three hour training for the leadership and YMCA Directors on the multi faceted layers of growth mindset. One of the benefits of being a polymath is that I reside in various fields; K-22 education, creativity/innovation, neuroscience, business, the arts, athletics and even stamp collecting (yes...I collect stamps!). I have connected with some of the top neuroscientists in the area of brain capital and brain health. I have connected with some of the top neuroscientists in the arts (especially music), arts as medicine and arts in health. How can I be a better bridge? Now is the time to truly connect with one another across fields and even in specific disciplines within fields. In order to continue to have an inclusive conversation about building brain capital and ensuring creativity and flourishing for ALL, we have to get out of our silos and come together. We get through life by having the right tools in our tool box and knowing when to use these tools at the right time. With anxiety and depressive disorders being the top two contributors to brain health decline, understanding how the arts, especially music, can be a tool to assuage those effects is essential. Dr. Psyche Loui explains this from the neurological perspective below. This is why we include music in our corporate trainings and I facilitate teacher development in schools to help teachers incorporate music and the arts into their curriculum to support the academic content but also to support the social and emotional growth of themselves and their students. It's all connected...even throughout time. Neuroscientist Bianca Jones shares her research on how trauma can impact one generation to the next by showing us what happens to mice who have gene modifications that come from their ancestors' experience. As I work with people from various cultures, including my own and those of indigenous backgrounds, I am very much aware of what generational trauma can do to our creative identity, how we respond to stress and how we lead. This is a section of our NeuroSomatic Creativity? training- the understanding of how the mind, brain, and body interact to affect our creative thought and how we show up in the world. We realize that part of our brain's memories may be carrying trauma from our ancestors. It is now proven with science (epigenetics). There are things we can do, including arts healing, that can address this generational trauma to help us create better and lead better.
