If you've driven past the site of the former College Lake Dam, you may have noticed work in the former lakebed of College Lake moving closer and closer to Lakeside Drive. That's because construction crews are continuing to make progress with stream restoration for Blackwater Creek. Stream restoration at the upper reaches of the project area has been completed, and we’re excited to be nearing planting season where we’ll be planting native plants and trees to help create a new, thriving ecosystem. Then the real fun happens as the completed areas begin turning green with new vegetation. WaterJAM is the annual conference for VA AWWA and VWEA held in Virginia Beach, and it is our favorite week of the year. Lynchburg Water Resources sends a delegation of water, stormwater, and wastewater professionals to the conference every year, attending technical sessions, workshops, and much more. With the College Lake Dam now removed after 90 years, we’ve unshackled Blackwater Creek, allowing fish to thrive and sediment to flow naturally once again in the City of Lynchburg. ?? Resource Environmental Solutions LLC is our dedicated construction crew on-site, embarking on the next phase: stream and wetland restoration. These innovative toe wood structures are being installed offline and once flows are diverted to the area are set to fortify the stream banks against erosion, all while nurturing vegetation and creating a sanctuary for fish. This isn’t just construction; it’s the emergence of life for Blackwater Creek, missing for decades.
