This Mother’s Day weekend we sit down with three moms who have had experiences with the child welfare system and one aunt who is currently fighting for custody of her niece and nephew. A former Hennepin County Child Welfare Investigator confirms she witnessed first hand the patterns of racial discrimination that these families are calling out. Solutions are being worked on by a group of organizers but they’re facing resistance in their work. I’m not sure people understand the magnitude of this issue. By the age 18 over 50% of Black children nationwide will experience a child welfare investigation with 1 in 10 being separated from their parents.
