The lack of independent media owned and operated by people of color is a result of decades of systematic inequities. The people most harmed by not having access to culturally competent, trustworthy, fact-based news and information content are the very same people the Democratic Party claims to so vigorously represent. Why, then, is BIPOC media so marginalized and often outright excluded from their communication plans in favor of white-owned corporate media? The Harris campaign exposed many problems the Democratic party has to grapple with to regain some of its footing with communities of color. BOMESI (Black Owned Media Equity & Sustainability Institute) discusses how inequitable media spending is amongst one of the bigger problems that need to be solved. Luz Media is a member of the BOMESI collective, which seeks to support and expand a Black and diverse-owned independent media ecosystem.

2024 has turned out to be another violent year for the trans community around the world, with violence claiming over 350 trans lives between October 2023 and September 2024. 93% of all reported murders were of people of color–a 14% increase from last year. The increase in hostile rhetoric and discriminatory laws by some politicians is also contributing to the overall sense of uncertainty and fear the trans community is feeling. Transgender Day of Remembrance, recognized every 20th of November, is for honoring and remembering every transgender person lost to violence. At Luz Media, we stay committed to telling stories that promote peace, facts, and human kindness.
